What I can't figure out is how he manages to stop like that and freeze the balls in mid-air, defying gravity.

Keno, thanks for the opportunity to see the tape.
Really remarkable. His eyes seem glued to the balls on the way up and while
they are up. He seems to know where they will fall. Tremendous eye hand coordination.
Kevan watched the video yesterday and tried it with 3 hatchets. I was in the emergency room with him last night for many hours. They were trying their best to save the 2 fingers that he had left! :) :D

Hatchets have but one surface to look out for - bowling balls have an infinite number of them.
That guy's pretty good. I can't do the easy ones where you keep in a rhythm and he's doing all this asymmetric stuff. A$$hole.
