Irish (partly) Catholic but I hate corned beef and cabbage. Green (or any color) beer rocks though.

In economics, we have a notion . . . "efficiency wages." If it's hard to sort out good workers from bad and hiring and firing is costly, pay above-market wages so that losing a job is a bigger hit to the employee but make them work harder. The market can sort things out from there.
Putting theory into practice, I work my research assistants pretty hard, but today I took them out for a pint of Guinness at lunch.
