I have not tried them, but seen that Twofish Unlimited has water bottle cages that secure to the frame w/o bosses. Here is a link to their site: http://www.twofish.biz/bike.html

I think the twofish might work on the seat tube but on the downtube the weight of a full waterbottle will slip.

I bought a racing cross bike that had no waterbottle bosses and for 40 bucks a frame builder added them.

The twofish one is decent, but it's not a long term solution. Mine rotates frequently. I'll be adding Rivnut bottle bosses soon. About $10-20 at most decent shops.

If it's a steel bike (traditional-ish diameters) then water bottle clamps are ideal.

Agreed. Clamps with something, silicone pad, etc. to protect the finish.

Or carry the bottle in your jersey. As Tim Krabbe reminds us, your bike will be lighter.

Ya want a strapon type or something more permanent?

If steel, get a welder/frame builder to put one on. If plastic or aluminum or even ti, a decent bike shop can drill holes and install RivNuts..

I have one that attaches with the Velcro strap. It slipped and rotated. I then put a small piece of an old tire tube between the downtube and bracket on the water bottle cage. It worked well -- no more slippage.

I posted this a while ago- http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=155361

I ended up strapping a cage to the ST with a strip of tube. Looks really ugly but works...

Duct tape.

properly installed rivets or brazed/welded in bosses would certainly be the best

everything else ends up looking like a total kludge imo

i suppose the "old school" style clamp on type cage is aight, if you have a bike with tubes of the correct size.

I really loved a Sachs cross bike that I borrowed from DBRK. When he decided to sell it I looked into adding bosses but gave up because I didn't want to ruin the JB paint nor pay for a repaint. When I rode it there was a double bottle holder mounted to the seat post as often used by tri-guys. It worked great for bottles but precluded a saddle bag.

I'm tempted to try rivnuts on mine. The ones on the down tube are clearly rivnuts. Just not sure how well they would grab on the curved inside wall of the 27.2mm ID seat tube...
