It's time for a possible history lesson.

I've always wondered what the connection between the rasta paint scheme and cycling was.

You see so many frame builders and component manufacturers using the paint scheme (especially in the 90s).

Why? Just for looks? Or is there some other strange connection.

Just curious....

Was this inspired by the "rasta" Serotta Pronto on eBay?

Good question, though. Never thought about it before now.

maybe no actual connection, just a rad color scheme??
I've always wanted to build myself one of these old bonty's though!

Looks cool. But not sure how it would come off as the scheme for an entire bike.

I've thought about it before but once I saw the PSA for the pronto and noticed it was rasta the thought popped in my head again.

Serotta, king, Paul, bontrager, Zo, all used it and I'm sure there are more.

I think it had more to do with general demographics at the time. Rasta/reggae music was part of the mtB culture and with it the rasta "vibe". Folks that were into mtb at the time were also into these other things...thus the way demographics work.
In the late 80's and 90's I owned a VW, listened to certain type if music, graduated from art school, raced mTBs, watched certain movies, etc. During that time a lived in a small New England town. No one else in that town was interested in these things. I would show up at a mTB race and people would have VWs, listen tot the same music, many had gone to art school, etc.

The first Jamaican themed bike I remember was a Basso Gap from the 80's. I raced one for a year or two before trading it in for a Pinarello. I found a random picture of someone else's.

and a whole thread on mtbr, including a Rhygin Ra owned by misterdangerpants (his collection of off-road bikes must be like a museum):
