Hi all, need some help choosing a seatpost for a frame I just purchased from a fellow Forumite.
Currently running a 20mm carbon set back from FSA, and a Selle San Marco Aspide, which I love. It has the carbon oversize rails. My question is, can I run a Thomson Masterpiece with these rails? If not, I am interested in a 3T Ionic LTD with zero set back. Am curious to know if the comfort factor between the Thomson and Any carbon post is noticeable. Kinda hard to justify a $250 carbon post which is heavier than the Thomson...and over $100 more expensive...

Any other brand suggestions?

The difference in comfort between a Thomson and carbon posts may be noticeable. Though I don't have any firsthand experience (I use Thomson only), Velonews did a seat post comparison and found the Masterpiece to be the second-most abusive post out there. See http://velonews.competitor.com/2012/12/training-center/technology/from-the-pages-of-velo-getting-the-most-from-your-post_267560/3. The study doesn't cover 3T products, but Zipp and FSA both received favorable reviews.

Thomson's faq on the Masterpice says 7x7mm to 7x10 mm oversized are fine. I can't feel the difference between carbon and ti or steel on the damping. I suspect it's marketing hype.

I went from daily riding on a 27.2 FSA carbon seatpost to daily riding on a 30.6 Thomson Masterpiece, and have not noticed any difference at all

I have classic geometry though- don't have 300mm of seatpost between the frame and the saddle. maybe the difference becomes noticable for guys sitting up on mile long seatposts coming out of short seat-tubes on compact bikes

i'm one of those guys the b mentions

even so, i'm in the camp that says it doesnt make a difference.

just get the thomson and be done with it. chop it down to minimum size if grams are important.

I think changing your saddle setback from 20mm to Zero will have more of an affect than weight.

correct! Other than that, a seat post holds your seat in place. You won't feel the difference.

IMO what the op asks is very subjective, for example some people love the thomson seatpost, other guys hate them, in my particular case I dont like the ritchey carbon ones because flex way too much to notice that the harmonics of that seatpost is not good, but other guys loves them. IMO the op needs to try what he wants to do to know what will happen.

Most top and bottom clamp posts are no issue with 7x9 carbon rails
I have used fizik carbon rail on an elite no issues.

I have use EC70 specialized zertz and Thomson on same bike
My butt cannot tell the difference

Carbon for weight and looks preference

Two seatposts with a noticeable difference compared to straight seatposts:

Of the two, the CG-R can accommodate both traditional and oversized saddle rails.

Harmonics (i call it like that because I cant find another word, sorry)... what happens is that the seatpost flex enough to flex in the wrong pattern when you are spining too much. Nice finish, light stuff but at 100 rpms spining and 200 pounds the thing grabs the wrong flex pattern that at least I can feel. Like if you were bouncing in the saddle at the wrong rhythm. Great seatpost, dont get me wrong... but not for me.

Not saying that thomson seatposts are bad at all, but some guys just dont like them, read some guys hate them because are too stiff, personally never used one because I dont like how they built the seat back or probably I would have used one already, but doubt are bad seatposts at all.
