View Full Version : Fat tires + low pressure + narrow rims = bead blow offs?

I'm being sorely tempted by the $12ea rims over at Wheels Mfg. But are 18.3 mm rims more apt to let go of the bead on 35mm tires in hard corners at low pressures? I'm thinking of a set of CX specific beater wheels.

I ran 29er tires (with tubes) on narrow road rims for a while without issue...

you are better off with wider rims 100% of the time for cx. less pinch flats and just a better ride overall.

i would look for a cheap set of a23 based wheels - as they are more plentiful/less desirable (for whatever reason) than their HED/Pacenti/H+Son counterparts...yet still perfectly great rims for cx.

yeah, i agree. echelon john built up a set of a23 to 7700 for me. my favorite wheels so far. i don't really get the quality hierarchy mentioned in the rim thread but i'm not a wheelbuilder so i guess i don't have to deal with the same issues. in use, they've been bomber so far.

I have some standard width Neuvation wheels on my Moots PsychloX and have run up to 35s without problems. I also run Racing Ralphs (2.3?) tubeless on some pretty narrow 29er wheels without problerms and I weigh 185#.
Maybe not optimum by some opinions, but it can be done.
