Interesting read. Thanks for sharing. Fortunately, my commuter sits next to me all day :)

Usually when I hear bike thieves, my first reaction is that I should lock a 'bait' bicycle to a rack, dress in black and hide behind a nearby shrub for a thief to arrive.

Just some broken bones, and say something like, "tell all your friends about me." (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJS7NaktQ8g)

I commute and we have an indoor bike room that's in the back hallway of our building shares a (thin) wall with the security office and is only steps from the loading dock. I never used to lock my bike up, feeling safe due to nearby security and the indoor location. Some bike shop employee friends of mine suggested to me that I put a lock on it - that they hear stories every week about another person who didn't lock their bike up because they thought it was safe.

So I now just leave a u-lock with a cable for the back wheel stationed at work and make sure I take the extra 4 minutes a day to lock & unlock it on the way in and out. I was glad for the warning before I became another number in a database.
