Lake Placid NY: Local Knowledge?

The wife and I are escaping this weekend up to Montreal to pick up a little lugg'd package, and on the way back we are going to spend a night in the Lake Placid NY area. Anyone in the area care to recommend a nice dinner location, or other stuff i should be checking out during the day, evening?

We stayed at a campground many years ago. The locals steered us to a local dump where, just before sundown, we watched the bears forage. That was 40 years ago. I'm sure they are protecting the bears and us from each other by now but ask around anyway. Go to the Adirondack Museum! But be forewarned, you will want to trade one of your bikes for an Adirondack Guide Boat. Rent a canoe and paddle on Long Lake (or any lake).

Have some pie (or pick one up to bring home) at the Noonmark diner in Keene Valley.

Definitely Lake Placid Pub (http://www.ubuale.com/)! Wife and I enjoyed the beer while our daughter played in the kid's room... amazing. Supposedly the Ubu Ale is their specialty.

Truly great food can be had in Keene at the ADK Cafe (http://www.theadkcafe.com). Keene is a 20 minute, very scenic drive on 73 South out of Lake Placid - you drop through a gorge with two spectacular lakes.

On the way back from Keene, you can turn off 73 and head out to the Adirondack Mountain Club for the night. The historic Adirondack Loj (http://www.adk.org/page.php?pname=adirondak-loj) is right on Heart Lake - very pretty.

I was there this time last year for my sons hockey tournament....beautiful town. The only thing is that the town will be busy because of the CanAm hockey tournaments that are always going on, but it's really nice.

Inventive food and cocktail menu and an extensive beer list. The owners are mountain bikers, I've run into them on the local trails.

If you can get a spot, Garde Manger in Old MTL is maybe the best restaurant in Canada. Sometimes they will sit you at the bar if you walk in early.

Yeah, I'll second the recommendation for the Adirondack Museum, although, I'd make it a stand-alone weekend destination. The museum, while not huge, is very entertaining, and the boat display including the unique guideboats is outstanding. Guideboat aficionados obsess over construction details at a level only exceeded by bicyclists on the Paceline Forum!

I love the Adirondacks and have spent much of my life there, you should have a great time.

Two things to do while in town. First, go see the rink. For those of us of a certain age who grew up in New England, and I suspect Wisconsin, Michigan, and the Dakotas, that rink is hallowed ground. Just standing in it gives me the chills. Nothing in my life thrilled me more than what happened under that roof and the building still holds its energy.

Second, my wife and I went down the bobsled run and really enjoyed it. We went around this time of year (about 10 years ago) and the sleds were on wheels. You won't believe how narrow that opening is that the sleds go through.

Walk around Mirror Lake. Rent a canoe on Mirror Lake.

Hike up Cascade Mt. About 10 minute drive from LP headed towards Keene. Trailhead is right off the road just before Cascade Lakes. About 1.5 to 2 hour hike to top. Great views. Or hike up Mt Jo at Adirondack Loj.

If you are into golf Lake Placid resort Links course the mountain course Or Whiteface inn. Or Craig Wood.

Go inside olympic rinks. Usually something going on like figure skating or hockey.

Drive up Whiteface Mt. You need to check if it is open as they are re paving road this year.

And yes, pie at Noonmark diner in Keene Valley.

Boy am I jealous...we used to go up there just about every fall for great hiking in the high peaks. The leaves, if still up, should be spectacular! My first recommendation, Whiteface Mt in Wilmington if you can do this side trip. Drive the road to the top for a fantastic view. I like the Adirondack Loj at Heart Lake, but liked seeing the Olympic Sports Center at Mt. Van Hoevenberg a little better. We walked around the site, saw the bob sled run, and walked in the woods a bit and found remanents of the 1932 bobsled run! Eerie... Of course, the old ice arena in town is a must...

I'm going out on a limb for a dinner place, and maybe others can chime in, Casa Del Sol in Saranac Lake was tops. I seen it reopened this summer but had a so-so review after only a couple of weeks. Maybe they worked the kinks out?

One of my favorite places, spend roughly 20 weekends a year(about half of them in the winter) in the Keene/Valley/LP area, vast majority of them in a tent or lean-to, this is why my 2011 Outback just went past 80K miles. Camped last weekend in the Lake Colden area, leaves were peak or just past peak in some areas.

Two of my favorite Fall hikes;

Blueberry Cobbles-Bald Peak-Rocky Peak Ridge to Giant from New Russia and thumb your way back if you don't have two cars after descending Giant, about 13 miles so may be longer than your looking for.

Kayak the length of Lake Placid to Whiteface landing and hike up Whiteface.

This is Columbus day weekend, lots of tourists and crowds! Brewfest is at the arena on Saturday so it may be an option for you or you can plan around it.
