Spend some time drooling over the photos.

To each their own, but bikes are meant to be ridden.

It is beautiful, but...

Chisholm originally hung the group on a custom Eddy Merckx MX Leader frame but its shaped tubed didn't seem quite right for the 50th anniversary group's more classic aesthetic. So he ended up buying a used Merckx over the Internet for just US$660, complete with a Shimano 600 group that he promptly discarded.

"I didn't give it away," he told BikeRadar proudly. "I threw it all away!"Is this a joke?

Looks mint except for the dry rot on the tires.

OldPotatoe's hatred of Shimano knows no bounds!

I came here to quote the same quote and ask the same question.

That tri color Shimano 600 stuff was good gear. I ran the STI 8-sp version on my messenger bike when I was doing that kind of insanity. It was absolutely bombproof.

Nice photo shoot. Now is there a more period correct/frame maker for that particular group?

Just curious...fully aware that Merckx bikes have a special place in history.

Nice photo shoot. Now is there a more period correct/frame maker for that particular group?A 1983 Italian frame would be most appropriate.

OldPotatoe's hatred of Shimano knows no bounds!Just imagine if the frame had come with SRAM components on it—he would've had a priest perform an exorcism on the frame. Fwiw, that quote notwithstanding, from his comments here I don't get the impression that OP hates Shimano.

crusty (but oddly likeable)

Sounds about right :)

Cool write-up, beautiful bike!

The Merckx is a beauty... but since you asked the question; Serotta made a special edition frame to celebrate Campagnolo's 50th. It was equipped with the 50th grouppo and had a few special details like the fork crown with both company logos.

No joke. The frame was in good shape, the components were worked, done. I tried to look to donate some to Community Cycle but weren't even worth that.
Wasn't Tri color gear but predates that, maybe from mid 80s or so, friction shifters.

Had a 1990 Merckx, not a 1983 one. Still want a Century or Luigino but gonna be happy with what I got.

Don't mind shimano at all...don't want to use it but... The stuff was worked but my stuff. If it were scam stuff, the only difference I would have thrown it away even if in good shape.

and it's, ahem, my size...better keep an eye on it!

i'm always intrigued by build variations...your merckx is a '90 mine is a '95...and your HTA *appears* to be somewhat slacker than the geo found on mines. besides the visual, i've measured mine at +74deg.

clearly OP's has alot more of Ugo's DNA in it's makeup, visually not too different from what merckx actually rode...mine looks to be after some sort of evolutionary tipping-point.

Pretty. Merckx's had 'models' and such but varied. Fork, brazeons, tubing, even geometry. Have 3 Merckx's...one MXLeader getting painted now. Gonna mount a CRecord/Delta group when it's done.
