Hi Guys..

I just pulled the trigger on a new Garmin 810.. super Wiggle deal..

I am in the NYC North and north west riding area.. CT NJ NY

Would like some opinions on the various map options open to me. Is there a particularly good source for OSM cycling friendly maps.. how do they compare to Garmin house blends..

Want to try and just stick to Map info.. Thanks..

Free maps here: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/

I have found them to be as good or better than the $100 Garmin maps.

IMO the mother of all guides:
http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2013/05/download-garmin-705800810.html

Tells you exactly what to do and where to get the maps. From this site:
http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/

which is great and where I got my NYC/NJ maps along with Mass and Maine, etc.

Alot of these sites probably have the same maps since they are the open source maps.

i echo the above. i have never had a problem with my 800 and OSM, and the sites above are what i used, pretty sure. no need to buy any maps. i ride the exact areas you describe.

Use the open street maps w directions from DC Rainmaker. There may be one error on his instructions. When you put the micro sd card in the unit you may need to make a Garmin folder on the sd card. This allows the garmin to create the correct folders. If you need help let us know or send a pm.

Forgive my ignorance - how are these maps different than what garmin provides on the new devices? I understand having to do this for travel, but I'm also riding in the tri-state area.

The Garmin maps look like a Garmin GPS. Color, arrows, marked turns, zoom in and out. The open source maps I've used were just maps, monochrome, with minimal alerting on courses.
