Yeah, Dodgers in a short series is not going to be an easy matchup. Potential for Kershaw 3 times in 5 games... ouch.

David Price. Sanchez will be in pen, he hasn't started since early August...out with an injury for a month or so.

Price led league in innings and KO's, if I am not mistaken.

And Porcello had a rough September, but I believe he led the league in shutouts...

It's been painful watching him limp around on that bad hip. Didn't expect to make a long run in the playoffs with our bullpen anyways, but would have liked a little more fight than an 8-0 shutout. If they manage to resign Martin, I think they'll make a strong run next year. If not, who knows?

Well, the Cards are coming home from LA tied 1-1. I'll take that.

But the big game today was the Nats vs the Giants. 18 innings !!! What a brutal loss for the Nationals. After an incredible performance by Zimmermann, and have him pulled for the closer with 2 outs in the 9th only to have the Giants tie it 1-1, then for the game to remain tied until the 18th. The longest post-season game ever.

My condolences to the Nats fans - that was a tough one. Good luck on the road. (The longer these series go the better I think it is - more great baseball for all of us to enjoy.)

Will there be temptation to hold Bumgarner back and start Vogelsong or Lincecum on Monday? I say go with Bum, you've got to finish the job asap. But it would also be nice to start him in game 1 of the NLCS (gotta get there first)

That is an interesting thought! Haven't seen that much around. It could end up being TOO much time off for Bumgarner though. Look what happened to Kershaw in game 1…

Crazy that we got the first two in DC. Never would have expected that. Looking forward to Monday!

Also, I think Posey was safe on that replay in the top 9th yesterday, would have ended it at 2-1. But not enough to overturn out call.

In the end it doesn't make any difference how you win...I guess. Love the Giants and hope they can produce some offense. Rather than waiting for the other team to thow a wild pitch or pray the pitcher throws it over the head of the catcher during an attempt at an intentional walk.

Well the Nats won the first game in San Francisco because Bumgarner tried to get the lead runner at third instead of throwing to 2nd or 1st base. The ball got past Sandoval and wound up in the bullpen down the left field line, allowing two runners to score on the throwing error.
What you get from the Giants is dirt lot type rough and tumble games which I personally prefer than slugfest à la Dodgers/Nationals.

Cardinals vs. Giants should be very entertaining.

No he did an awkward studder step then signaled for Posey (to hide the balk) that kinda confused the umps I think , in retrospect they probably wished they called a balk. Not that 3-1 would have made a whole lot of difference at the end. Looks like the homeplate ump starts to raise his arms then hesitates. Ole Bum is a pretty sly country boy.

Wow, what a game. Back and forth.

In the top of the 9th our horrible "closer" allows the tying run to score from 2nd on a wild pitch and the replacement catcher (Molina out with an oblique strain) is unable to frame the pitches but Kolten Wong hits a walk-off home run in the bottom of the inning and we go to San Francisco all tied up 1-1.

If SF wins and goes to the WS who is the underdog? Not KC, the Giants have been the underdog in all their series yet winning by making less mistakes than their opponents. Pitching and a sound defense followed by a timely hit after an opponent makes an error has gotten them to big game and a chance to win the WS. If they win tonight it'll be the third time in 5 years, surely that is not just LUCK. Home runs are exciting but won't win you the WS, ask Bonds.

I relish every Giants series victory over the Cardinals. In 1987, I was a Bay Area transplant, attending law school at WashU. That fall, I went to two NLCS games at the old Busch Stadium. The first was the Dave Dravecky complete game 4-hit shutout in 38-degree weather. The second was game 6 that the Giants lost on Candy Maldonado's failed attempt at a sliding catch of a sinking line drive in Game 6 that effectively cost the Giants the series. Had Candy continued running for the ball he would have caught it. My friend Jon and I were heaped untold abuse, peanut shells, and beer by the Cardinals fans that night. So, even 27 years later, I enjoy it that much more when the Giants eliminate the Cards.

As a Royals fan, this was a real mixed bag. Great series, some outstanding play for both teams. I'm very proud of how the Royals got there & how they played once they did. Not the outcome I hoped for (yeah, it hurts), but wow, what a ride. Plus, it took one of the best pitching performances I've seen since I'm not even sure when, a great play at second base last night, and some ungodly two strike hitting by Pence (.500 with two strikes? Are you kidding me?) to take them down.
I can only hope that this is a view of what's to come & not a flash in the pan. I honestly only half followed them lately because there is only so much bad a person can take, season after season.
Now, if baseball can just do something about the outrageous payroll discrepancies between teams, perhaps small market teams can spice up the Series more often.

I can't believe after review they called him safe without touching the bag (and arguably cost the mets the game) and then they suspend him the next day ?? :crap:

ctcyclistbob
10-12-2015, 10:06 AM
Agreed. He went for the player, hard, and not the base. In fact he didn't even touch the base. Unbelievable to have him called safe whether or not Tejada touched second.

It seems wrong to take a guy out and then for the Dodgers to appeal the play. Instead of reversing the call Utley should have been called out and the Mets awarded a double play.

Utley deserves the suspension, and now I hope the Dodgers lose the series. Hopefully Matt Harvey and his protected arm can shut them down.

goonster
10-12-2015, 10:22 AM
I think this is the rare case where the review got in the way of making the right decision, because it focused narrowly on whether Tejada touched the bag, and took the focus away from the bigger picture of whether the slide was legal.

Utley was safe for two separate reasons:
- Since Utley was called out by the umpire (the call that was later reversed), he was not obligated to touch the bag. He also wasn't tagged, ergo safe.
- Apparently there is a rule (can't find the ref. now) that if both the fielder and the runner fail to touch the bag, the base is awarded to the runner.

While I understand, and accept, the concept of the breakup slide, it makes sense only in the greater picture of the neighborhood play, where the runner is presumed out and therefore given latitude to limit further damage. If the neighborhood play does not apply, the bias should shift to protecting the infielder.

Ray
10-12-2015, 02:36 PM
Probably gonna take a rule change, because there have been zillions of hard slides away from the base like that over the years that were never called. Breaking a leg in a playoff game is a good way to make sure this situation gets addressed. I agree it was a dirty slide, but the same basic thing I saw Utley (and others) do many many times in the years he was playing for the Phils, and never got called for. So he probably thought it was just a hard slide to break up a double play, as he's done over and over. I suspect his appeal will include video of a LOT of examples of similar plays that were never called.

Baseball probably needs to get really explicit about what is and isn't allowed, and hopefully in a way that doesn't take as long for the umps and players to understand as the Posey rule did at home plate.

I don't see Harvey retaliating in this game, at least against Utley directly. Because he's not a regular player for LA - he's been limited to two pinch hit at-bats in this series so far and I don't think you'll see him starting tonight, if he's playing. So he'd probably only bat in a situation where a pinch-hitter is called for and that's almost never a time to go hitting the batter and put him on base. I suspect this gets settled early next season sometime, but my guess is Chase is out of baseball after this season. As great as he was for as long as he was, he was painful to watch for the past couple of years. Hot start in 2014, that got him into the All-Star game, but the wheels came off after those first few months. I'm pretty sure this was the last year of his contract and I can't see him making a big-league roster next year...

Ugh, hard to agree with that statement. I have never found the Dodgers likable.

Jeff

Perhaps that's because you're a sensible human being who refuses to pay $10 for a crummy Dodger Dog and $15 for a domestic light beer all the while being advertised to high heavens non stop via jumbotron? I really hope I don't have to watch the Cubs get beat by the Dodgers. Maybe the Cubs' new jumbotron reversed the curse tho we'll see

Cinema, were you the cat who went to every stadium a few years ago for those Mastercard commercials? Did they hook you up with $2 beers at the House That Ruth Built

That was me! But really I'm just a Chicago native so I've been spoiled by old school allure of a Wrigley game. I'll be there though, if they play each other, to watch the cubs lose once again.

What a game last night..GO JAYS!!!!!

Fans got too frustrated with the bad calls being made at home. Never seen beer cans thrown before...especially since they are so expensive at the dome. That second game had the botched play review at 2nd base with it turning into a run. Everybody could feel it happening again last night with that ridiculous play and the 20+ minutes of discussion and phone calls.

The Jays got through it and now on to finish off KC Royals:):):)

Bautista's home run will rank up there with Alomar off of Eckersley and, of course, Carter off of Williams.

Dyson didn't appreciate the theatrics, but the stance and the bat-flip were epic!

The one thing I notice, as common across essentially all sports, is that the quality of officiating is declining drastically. At some points the officiating is so bad that it ruins games for me.

I go watch the game, not the officials.

I hate the Dodgers as much as anyone, but this year I'm in their corner just to see Jimmy and Chase get one more shot at it. I dislike Dallas more than most any place in the US, but I was for the Rangers until yesterday too, for the predictable reason that Cole was the catalyst for them even being there - I was hoping for a Texas/Dodgers series... The Phillies are so far from competitive that I have to root vicariously through our ex-players.

I also hate the Mets and the Blue Jays, so I'm down to KC in the American League and either the Dodgers (this year only!) or Cubbies in the NL. It'll probably end up with the Mets and Toronto and I don't think I can be for either of them...

Why don't folks like the Blue Jays? Is it because of universal health care jealousy?

I would find it hard to imagine a better "human interest" sports story than Marcus Stroman.

Phillies fans remember '93.

Yesterday's crowd tantrum was not particularly endearing either.

Phillies fans are pretty civilized. Same with the Sixers. The Eagles and Flyers are where this city's fans got their bad reputation. And even that is only partly deserved.

A huge part of the reputation came from the famous 1968 Santa Claus incident where Santa was booed and pelted with snowballs at halftime. That's 47 years ago, folks. But let's face it - football and hockey are brutal sports and fans like the brutality. It's not just true in Philly - lots of hardcore fans are idiots in most cities... Fans from rival cities have been beaten up and killed in the very genteel LA and San Francisco. Philly has a reputation but a lot of other cities deserve it as much or more...

Nice job by the Mets!
Even though I'm a Yankees fan, I do live in Queens about 2 miles
from Shea.... uh "Citi Field"
Suddenly we have some real hardball excitement in NYC.

Mets/Cubs sounds fascinating

I don't have real feelings about the Mets one way or another. I probably should though because of one game I attended.

In 1962, the first season for the Mets, my dad had a meeting in NYC. All of our previous vacations we went camping in the PNW and British Columbia. So we decided to drive to NYC in July with no air conditioning in the car. My two sisters and I fighting for every inch of space in the back seat. Since this was a budget trip we drove from early morning to late at night.
In NYC my dad and I went to see the Mets play a game in the Polo Grounds against St Louis. Got to see Stan Musial, Red Schoendienst and Marv Throneberry.

It was a memorable trip as we also went to Washington DC, but the car ride is still memorable too.

Congratulations to the Mets. It's hard to believe that a team that was as bad as they were earlier in the season can appear so unbeatable in the post-season. I'm sure they'll represent the NL well in the World Series.

A very good friend of mine died this year. He was a massive Mets fan. Massive. I'm sorry that he's missing their run to the Series. It would have made him so happy.
I'm also sorry that he won't be here to let me rub his nose in it when my Royals beat them.
He was also the Jets fan to my Chiefs fan. Misery did love company. We had an "agreement". The Jets got to win the Super Bowl first, since their drought was a year longer than ours. Seems fair, then that we win the Series since our last was '85 & the Mets was '86. Miss you Jimmy, but go Royals! I know you'll understand. ;)

What a game last night. And, of course, my DVR cut it short with the delay, so I didn't record the last inning & a half.

Great game #1. Dramatic home runs galore.

Bottom of the 12th, tied 4-4. KC with runner on 2nd base, one out, runners on 1st and 2nd.

Oh my. Royals with a 3-1 game lead? Please end this Sunday night! My stomach can't take it.
Just read where the Royals have had SIX comeback wins in this post-season. That means over half (!) of their wins have been comebacks, with in-game win probabilities ranging from 1 to 25%. That's incredible.

Great game for Royals fans, not so great for Mets fans.

And lots of second-guessing for the use of the Mets bullpen...

I sort-of hope the Mets win on Sunday, if only so we can have more baseball.

Not me - Met fans complain about aggressive hard nosed base running and then cheer for a first pitch headhunter. Can't have it both ways... Finish 'em!

Ray has it right. Mets have always been an arrogant whiner team. It's their culture. The reason the Mets lost was not the bullpen, it was middle defense. The Royals keep putting the ball in play and the Mets are a bad defensive team up the middle. Cespides's misplay into an inside the park homerun and Murphy's misplay. They should have been out of the inning, but if you give a team more than 3 outs per inning, you lose no matter who is on the mound.

On that first pitch incident - KC can't have it both ways either.
During the pregame last night on sportsnet they showed a reel of KC pitchers
hitting batters, throwing at their heads, even throwing behind batters.
Pot, meet kettle. Thor's pitch was high, but it wasn't even inside of the
plate, let alone near AE's head. If you lean over the plate, expect to get
moved back.
