Okay, in a ··· experience, I went to ride home this evening and the stupid kryptonite cable lock wouldn't unlock. It's one of those ones where you can set 4 numbers. I have been using it for about a year with no problem. It would not open, spent close to an hour fiddling with the dials to no avail. (I got a few tips re things to try from the REI mechanic in my building). It is one of two locks on the bike -- there mostly for front wheel protection. As such, I could throw the whole bike into the back of a car and try to cut the cable myself at home. I could also try to get building security to cut it for me.

That said, is this a "known" thing that happens to these locks? I can't think of a single thing that I did differently, have had no problems to date with the lock. Any other thoughts beyond "cut the cable?" If that's the answer, any preferred techniques? I appreciate this post has a bit of a "how to copy your DVD illegally" tone to it, but them's the breaks I guess. All thoughts appreciated, by PM if uncomfortable posting publicly.

... Update .. so I now see that the internet is rife with such information re cutting the cable -- I would be interested if people have thoughts re this being a common occurrence however...

Couldn't manage to open with any of the links in Ultraman's post. FWIW a dremel cut through the cable in under a minute. Oh well.

This has happened to a combo kryptonite cable I had. I don't mess with them anymore. I used a pair of bolt cutters that had maybe 4 foot handles, a pretty substantial tool.

Yeah I reckon you could get through a cable lock with a pair of scissors in ten minutes. They're pretty easy to get through.

If your intention is to stop opportunists then cable locks will do the trick, but anyone with basic tools can get through them in seconds.

Yeah -- this is just used to cable the front wheel inside a bike cage at work -- I have a U-Lock for the frame and rear wheel. So it is mostly an opportunists notion, but maybe I'll go without from now on.
