Most of the time I'm wearing a Sinn U1, but I take it off before I get on a bike. It's already gonna hurt bad enough if I crash without having to worry about replacing the watch.

I alternative between my Casio Protrek with compass, thermometer, barometer, etc. and my Omega Seamaster GMT. I'm always nervous that I'll crash when wearing my Omega, so that is infrequent. The Casio has a feature that when you rotate your wrist up towards your face from horizontal, it automatically lights up the dial (this can be turned off). That's a handy feature for hands-free lighting of the watch.

Mostly whichever I happen to be wearing that day. I like riding with my Skagen because it's titanium, super light ;) my Seiko diver is a favourite usually but can't ride with it because vibration makes the band squeak and it drives me nuts wondering where on the bike it's coming from.

I've worn a watch nearly everyday since I was about 10, I'm 43 now. In the last year I've sold off a lot and have started to go without on rides when I remember to break the habit. Normally though, it's either a Swatch chrono, G-shock 7900NV, Tissot T-touch or Seiko SKX171 with a 007 bezel (poor man's marine master).

Same here. I love watches, but can't ride with one... at least none of the ones that I currently own. I thought about getting a GPS/Strava watch, but probably easier to keep using my phone or get a new CPU with that built in.

i love watches, but unfortunately the fact that i can always figure out what time it is by looking at some nearby device at all times has gotten me away from using them very much any more. which makes me a bit sad, actually. i still flirt with them from time to time, but then they get removed for riding and after a few rides i'll forget to put it on after and won't wear again for weeks...

as far as wearing while riding, my take is: in the summer, anything extra i have to wear in the heat is no good. and when it's cooler, i can't see the thing through my long sleeves anyway. so a bike computer does the job for me.

No. Highly doubtful. Watches that do not keep proper time need some attention.
Check with a local watchmaker.

Took me one aluminum Swatch, two titanium (REI and some other brand) and another plastic Swatch to come to that same conclusion.

Bought this because my wife gets bro' deals and the orange strap is cool (and washable, it turns out.) Forgot to take it off for the last race I did, but still managed to keep up on the climbs. The nylon strap does save some weight, in any case.

Oh yes, the crown guard takes some getting used to. I'll confess, practicality wasn't why I feel in love with the watch. I just dig its pared down, old school, less is more aesthetic. 100 years from now it will still be elegant, IMO.

Does anyone use a Garmin running watch to track their data instead of using say a 500? I get tired of the tabs breaking and thought that might be a good way to clean up the bars, but am wondering about battery life etc.

Depends on the watch. Most of the pure running watches will only give you pace, not speed. So it's fine for later if you just want a map of your ride, but not too helpful during the ride.

OTOH, the triathlon watches work well and usually have a specific setting for cycling.

I'm quite enamored with them as well. I've had a 104, 111, 372, 380, and a 249 (my personal favorite)

I havent worn a pam in awhile though preferring the AP diver with rubber strap and for the days when smaller is needed Patek Aquanaut with rubber as well.

Although today I have on my favorite all time watch - Casio Gshock GD350. It vibrates spectacularly every hour or when some covert alarm is needed. It also has excellent LED lights for viewing in less than ideal conditions.

for years I wore an el cheapo ($25) ebay Casio G-Shock at all times except when sleeping.

it survived a car/bike collision that totaled the bike and sent me to the ER. I even did a 368' cave dive with it and had no problems...

but, it finally died and I decided to go watch-free since every device on the planet has a clock feature now.

when riding, my Sigma cycling computer tells me the time.

Love it when Panerai shows up in the watch threads. 50, 49, 183, 118, 228 and 232 for me. Had an opportunity to trade the 118 for a 117 just for riding (crown is on the left). Never pulled the trigger. Sad face.

Using a Bathys 100 Fathoms...on some rides...just for looks.

I have one of these (Suunto Core) and take it on every ride to track altitude gain/loss. It also knows the times for sunrise and sunset, which is convenient, but I've had to resort to using the compass for navigation.

It's way too huge to put on my wrist, so I've removed the strap and I toss it into my saddle-bag.

Every morning I put on a watch when I leave the house and take it off when I get into the office. If I have to go to a meeting or something, I have to put the watch on. I just feel naked without it. and I just need to have the watch on when I ride. I also have to have a lightweight ti watch.

And I obviously need to upgrade the watches I own....

This is one of the reasons I have, for 40 years or so, never worn a watch on the bike with a (current dollar value) of more than about $50. That and weather.

If I trash my Timex, I will be angry, not devastated.

Does anyone use a Garmin running watch to track their data instead of using say a 500? I get tired of the tabs breaking and thought that might be a good way to clean up the bars, but am wondering about battery life etc.

I use a Garmin 910xt on my wrist, along with cadence sensor on chainstay. It's compatible with ant + power meters if you have one. Battery life is meant to be 12-13 hours (enough for an ironman triathlon if you're so inclined). I Don't miss having a computer on the bars. Great piece of kit.

I wasn't sure which watch thread to resurrect, so feel free to redirect this elsewhere if the information already exists.

I wear a battered old Suunto T3 that Ive had for years. I own a vintage Omega Deville dress watch that I have had for about the same amount of time. I bought the Omega in Geneva when I lived there because it is a beautiful object, but never wear it because it is too fragile.

Ive realized that I simply want one watch to wear for everything and I want a nice-ish watch. I would sell on my Omega to fund a new watch, and I suspect my budget is about $1200US (preliminary - happy for it to go down and MIGHT let it go up).

I don't dive and I don't dig the complications of mechanical watches, so a quartz model is fine with me. I am envisioning a few other things:

1) either a black or silver case and strap.
2) light-ish (perhaps incongruous with a good quality watch
3) simple aesthetics (no chronos/bezels)
4) durable as heck (I would wear this MTBing for example)
5) average size - I have 'slender' wrists, so no 46mm watches need apply
5) totally waterproof - swimming/showering.

My wife has a silver Omega (seamaster?) that is classic and elegant and I like it, but perhaps it is too timeless, if that is such a thing!? I followed that Sinn thread and thought it looked nice, but know nothing of the durability/quality/availability.

I know there are hundreds of options and it largely boils down to personal tastes, but are there any nice, simple sports watches that can take a beating and then be worn with dress clothes? Any examples?

I have been wearing an Omega Seamaster professional now for about 10 years, it's probably about 30 or so years old, a hand me down from my dad. I love it, the only time I take it off is when I sleep, it goes everywhere with me, beach, ocean, bike rides, work, you name it. Why keep a nice object in a box to wear occasionally, enjoy it every day. I have owned sport watches, not the expensive Suunyo or Garmin, eventually they all failed. If I need data I have my iPhone with my all the time, so I'm set. Do, wear your Omega, enjoy it!

Thanks for the advice. The Omega that I own is a dress watch, as in, unsealed and very delicate. It would die an immediate death within seconds in a shower! I would need to sell this one and buy another.

I agree, however, that there is no point in keeping a nice watch in a box.

I have no interest in smart watches at all - I like having a watch on my wrist and also carry my iphone almost everywhere I go, so I can check email that way if need be. It sounds horrible to have my watch beeping at me, honestly.

Any thoughts on other brands to watch for?

I like my Hamilton Khaki "pilot", it's pretty inexpensive (compared to what else people are showing here), bombproof-wear all the time I prefer steel band to leather because I don't worry about soaking it, simple elegant dial and no stupid multiple dials because I'm not an ace pilot. I'm not a deep sea treasure hunter or astronaut, and I'm not commanding the troops on a precise dawn artillery attack. If I were any of those things I would probably go with a cheap digital anyway! I just need to know what time it is, and sometimes the date. I regularly work across multiple time zones on several continents, I use a phone app for error free calculations for meeting times and flight schedules, better than a watch. Expensive complicated watches with lots of dials and frou frou are silly IMO. This one is 38mm for my skinny wrists, I wear it pretty much all the time, although for mountain biking I wear a cheap and light ironman that doesn't bounce around on the wrist as I prefer a loose band. This one is about $500 although different versions are often on sale for less.

For cycling, I've been wearing my Garmin Fenix 3 watch with custom Raw Hide strap!

I love getting text messages on the watch while riding, in the event someone texts/calls me for an emergency. I ride with my iPhone in a Rapha pouch in my jersey. Hard to see who calls or texts while riding.

Same features at the Garmin 1000 and my front end is clean! Just a view of my tires and sometimes bad cable job.

This is my new watch as of a couple of weeks ago - Orient RayII / Blue dial (Japanese/automatic/steel case/ref FAA02005D9) - and my first automatic. I wore it last Saturday for the 1st time on a road ride. Pic from post-ride recovery (Ballast Point Pale Ale) at Carlsbad State Beach.

Generally, however, I ride with a Bertucci A2-T Original Classic (USA/Swiss quartz/titanium case/ref 12074). The Bertucci has a Zulu band and w/the titanium case and quartz movement is much lighter, more rugged and probably better suited for cycling, especially off road.

This is what I am trying to avoid. I have done this for years, but would like to make a modest investment and have something of quality that I will wear all the time. I wear my Suunto everywhere and it is pretty trashed, plus the straps are breaking fairly frequently and they are proprietary to Suunto (+obsolete) so it doesn't make sense to search Ebay for old straps for something I actually don't love.

Time for a change!

Seiko's seem cool.

What about Citizen Eco-drive? Are they reliable? I love the idea and I think they've been around for a generation or so, so they must be fairly good quality?

I think Seiko and Citizen are Japan's two big watch manufacturers. Seiko also has solar watches (which is what "eco-drive" is). You are probably going to be fine with either of them. Both will probably last more or less forever. Seiko seems to have a bit more cachet among the watch crowd.

my problem with the former generation Fenix watches was their size, way too big for me for daily wear.

enter the fenix 5S. 42mm. perfect. i got the sapphire version and have been loving it. I own a ton of swiss mechanical divers, but this has been getting the bulk of wrist time.

with the right face, it is a pretty normal watch for daily wear.

Yah I sold my Fenix 3 (non-HR) here on the forum and was planning on picking up a Fenix 5S but then I started getting used to not wearing a watch, and I've got an Edge 1000 for biking that is better than the Fenix 3/5.

I miss some of the features for sure.. I still may pick one up. The F3 irritated my wrist some, I need to wear my Citizen for a while and see if my wrist is better as I have gotten pretty used to not having anything rubbing on my wrist. I could go with a bracelet version of the F5 too.. in the past when I've had watches with Bracelets they bothered my wrist a lot less due to the superior ability to fine adjust the length of the band. The F3 bracelet weighed a ton though and didn't have a very good micro adjust capability.

Nope, just left it on my wrist. True confessions, I still ride with my 800 on the bars so I can see it. I rarely look at the F3 while riding, but am intrigued by the "what's my FTP?" app/data field from Xert which doesn't work on the "old" 800.

My only complaint is that the titanium bracelet machined itself to death due to the vibrations over a year of rides. I should have swapped it out for a rubber strap for rides but, eh. Still love the watch.
