I am looking for a rear rack for my commuter/grocery-getter and there are a ton of options out there. Are there any crowd favorites? More affordable is better, but I wouldn't mind paying more for quality.

I like the Bontrager racks as they are very affordable. Tubus, as mentioned above are also very good racks and globally respected - albeit more money. In the end if its more function & usability that you're after, there are several affordable racks that will deliver the goods.

I'd stick a Bontrager on there and go.

I have a steel Blackburn rack on my MB-3 and a pair of panniers sized to hold a classic brown paper grocery bag each.

Consider how heavy a bag of groceries can get and match the weight capacity of racks you are considering. Bikes with short chainstays and/or riders big feet may incur heel strikes on the panniers.

I have one of these on my Atlantis and it's seen some touring and various other loads.

I also have a brand new one I'll part with for a fair price (fair being much less than the link). New never seen a thing other than my face, which to my amazement has driven the value south.

I've toured with Jandd, Tubus, Blackburn, and some cheap generic ones I see rebranded under various labels. The Tubus and Jandd are favorites I still have. My wife has a Tubus "fly" on her bike, and it works well given its super light weight and thin profile. Old Man Mtn also seems to have a good reputation, but I've never tried them. Cheap alloy ones will crack eventually, sooner rather than later if you stress them with heavy loads.

You can also look at Racktime racks. They are made by Tubus.

IMO; You don't want to be out in the middle of no where and have a rack break.

How to ruin a tour 101.

I've had problems with fitting Blackburn racks on 700c/27" touring bikes. With long stays they always end up tilted down at the rear, which tips panniers into the heal area as well as looking odd.

Tubus

Yep; Tubus. I've got the Tubus Luna and love the simplicity and functionality of the design.

This RS-22 has 433mm chain stays.

Another option is the US-made Bruce Gordon rack. A favorite of the touring crowd, it's not as cheap as the Chinese-made tubus, but its quality:

Another vote for tubus, elegant, sturdy and with great mounting hardware.

I have had extensive trouble free touring with an older Al Blackburn, always wanted to try one of the top of the heap, beautifully engineered and constructed CroMo and SS Nitto racks similar to this.

Best Tubus or Nitto!

I've tried a lot of racks also over the years. I agree with the others. The tubus racks are very well made. Each bend and weld are quite strong. They last a long time.

errrr, aren't some if not all Tubus racks made in Germany? I know the Classic is.

I think they're China "under German direction" or some such arrangement. I was very surprised when I found out, but the racks are good.

Just found a website review of the classic who mentioned, 'made in Germany'..not sure of the date but...when selling full boat tourers, they were our first choice...along with Ortleib...for commuter, Blackburn makes some nice 'budget' racks as well..

Tubus Cargo ... doesn't make a difference if China or Germany cause it's a dang good rack.

Durable, reliable, and the panniers stay put on rough terrain.

I have a Tubus Cargo on my touring bike now and a Jandd Expedition on my Tandem. Both are great racks and will do whatever you need. (The Tubus is lighter, but the Jandd has a nice metal shelf. Both are plenty strong).

If you think you might use this for touring some day, spend the money. I like the two I bought and would recommend them without hesitation. I've toured with full loads using both and they are great.
