i'm getting a new custom built steel bike made and looking for some opinions. i have ridden a kelly cross bike in the past and the bike was great and chris builds a roshambo which is a 29er but i have been looking locally at True Fabrications. the idea of using someone in Austin seems like a good idea. i wanted to know if anyone out there have ridden any of their bikes or better yet had one built or if you have any other ideas

cheers

I heard Tomii just moved to Austin from Boston. Have never ridden one of his bikes, but my god they are good looking! Looks like he exclusively works with fillet brazed steel frames.

I'd get a Zukas if in the market for a steel 29er.

I'm extremely pleased with my Zanconato 29er SS. He's a dedicated mtb rider and knows what works when it comes to 29er geometry.

If I had the money, I'd be in the queue for a 44bikes 29+ too. Kris makes some stunning looking bikes and seems to shred hard on them too.

44 bikes is at the top of my list for a custom steel 29er. Since it's custom you could get a 29+ frame and two sets of wheels (if desired). Also, it's hard to ignore Waltworks in this category.

Here's a third vote for 44 Bikes (http://www.44bikes.com/). Kristofer Henry has some fresh visions for bikes, including 29er's.

I also agree with the OP's suggestion of staying local and patronizing True Fabrications, although I haven't had any experience with them.

Not Austin local but for a 29er look at Waltworks also. Wish I'd kept mine!

Erik Rolf at Alliance built my road bike, and I love it. He also builds lots of 29ers:

I'm in Austin, btw, if you'd like to see the work Erik did for me.

Ditto on the Waltworks comment above. He'd be first on my list for a custom 29er that I planned to ride hard and put away wet. Some of the other customs are too pretty to scratch :)

OFM hit it, Zanconato 29ers have great reviews!

Garro/Coconino would be my choice. Great guy, great bikes.

I gotta agree I met the builder at FATS back in march and was super impressed. If I could afford a custom bike would look no further.

There's also the "Build yourownnameworks with Walt helping" option that looks like a whole lotta fun

He's kind of a sleeper outside of the Midwest, but Quiring, too, come to think of it.

Go for one without a crappy logo. (Because builders who put crappy logos on nice bikes need to get a clue).
