So the Boss made me a surprise coffee mug from ceramic for my birthday because I drink so much coffee at home. The Problem is that, that mug is the first try at making a ceramic mug and everytime I drink from it, it cuts my lip. And it only holds a few ounces of coffee. It's pretty hideous too....but I love it. It's just not very good for drinking coffee from.

So my wife is on a mission to find me a cool mug, cycling themed obviously. She also knows that my online porn site is FairWheel bikes. So I stumbled on this:

https://fairwheelbikes.com/tune-coffee-mug-p-5754.html

It's a 147 gram, hand made carbon fiber mug. And it's beautifully made.
Problem is that it's 250 bucks. :)

It's just nutty expensive. I thought I'd share. Because I'm kinda drooling over this ridicules example of excess.....

What do you guys/gals drink coffee out of at home? Do you have "your cup"?

For $250 the carbon fiber mug should not weigh over 125 grams. Great looking though - from a non-coffee drinker.

You should go custom, have a builder make one.

I just use small 8oz white ones. To keep me from overdosing on caffeine.

yep! I'll eventually buy another one to rotate. it's my favorite mug because I've used aeropress for years and its super solid paired with it. and it's just darn pretty. I wish the Riv logo was on both sides though.

If you're drinking espresso at home, get the Rapha set. Carbon fiber is kinda crazy, but it is goregous. My favorites are a set of four I bought in Italy that have the flags from the teams that participate in the palio competition in Sienna.

Jeff

It provides a somewhat smoother, muted coffee taste, but without losing any of the fundamental coffee information.

Plus it planes. Because it is laterally stiff but vertically compliant.

Plus it's 250 bucks.

I've just started commuting so I'm out of town 4 days a week and I've taken to using a bodum travel french press, which was 20 bucks. It's a french press and a go-cup all in one. But at home, it's just whatever decent sized mug is clean as I stumble towards that first coffee o' the day. I have a sorta cool looking cup in the office -- it's white porcelain with a white silicone top and the whole thing is a sculpture of the traditional white paper diner go-cup. The wife got it for me. Maybe MOMA, maybe bed, bath, and beyond . . . I'm not sure.

For those of us who drink coffee, it's really about the coffee more than the mug.

Just for the record, what I'm seeing on that Fairwheel site is a cup and saucer, not a mug. IMO, for proper caffeination one needs a mug, preferably one that holds 10 to 12 ozs not the paltry 6 to 8 ozs of the CF one shown. Otherwise it's cool. I wonder how the British company that everyone loves to hate missed offering this up first?

8oz is exactly the size of an Aeropress pull. Plenty of caffeine.

You mean over for 2014, not over, over, right?

Over and done. No more (Bethel Spring) Series races at that venue due to the 2009 code change making it a retail park. There are two more businesses there open on Sundays as of right now, one is a gym that is open early Sundays.

I felt it was not safe even this year, with the traffic on the other side of the road. I pointed this out to the First Selectman, a road rider himself (I've even ridden with him without knowing who he was). He asked me to wait until after the Series.

After the Series we got in touch again. He agreed with me. One day race, maybe. Series, no way.

I'm looking into alternate venues. I made a massive financial commitment this year in January, not realizing how the retail stuff would impact the venue. I lost some money due to the extra police and staffing I needed (round numbers, $42k in, $45k out). I got slammed due to the weather and the double police and almost double staffing. I hope to reduce costs a bit and I hope that the weather isn't as consistently terrible as the 2014 spring.

I feel obligated to hold a race at Bethel though, at least one race. There's too much to leave behind. Memorial. History. Etc. It might have to be a holiday race, like a July 4th or something like that, when the retail locations are closed. Won't do it Memorial Day, Labor Day might be too late.

No idea about the Summer Series as I'm not part of that, but my understanding is that that will also go by the wayside due to the increased traffic.

Geez, that's horrible, horrible news. I am terribly sorry to hear that. (I'm also sorry to hear you lost money. I think the series was a great deal for the racers.)

Aki, thanks for everything you've done to date for racers in NY/CT. If there's anything I can do to help find an alternate venue etc, I'd love to help.

Thanks. I'm pinning a lot of hope on securing New Britain / Walnut Hill Park for the spring. I make a presentation next week to the city, I've been in talks with them (sporadically, mostly) since March, when I first realized that the Series wouldn't work at Bethel. I'll make a formal announcement one way or another when I get news about a venue. Until then it's just rumor :)

In March, after traffic and tenant issues, I talked to the USAC official. He's been there for pretty much all of its years first as a racer and then as an official, and he looked at me and shook his head. "You know it's done here, right?" That made it a reality for me.

I live north of Hartford now, much further away from Bethel then when I lived in Norwalk (for 16 years). Therefore unfortunately for the NY/NJ racers it makes more sense to look closer to home. There are two other potential venues in the same area (I happen to have a surveyer teammate, a promoter also for CX, and he drives around looking for possible venues) but neither have been used for a race. I'd rather use a known venue. I may think about trying for the other venues as one day races.

As far as value, it's hard. I charged $17 per week for pre-reg for the Series, $22 for each week pre-reg weekly. Slice $3 off the top for insurance and it might be a bit low, considering that $8k or so went to prize money, but at the same time I think that the racers realize that it's a "friendly" price and so they support the race even if they end up skipping the race.

Also I want 80 rider fields than 40 rider fields, I want riders to show up even if they just sit in and train or socialize before/during/after the race. It's more fun that way. I hate doing races where 15-20 riders show up, I feel bad for the promoter, for the racers, for bike racing in general. It's just depressing.

I use whatever is clean and in the front of the cabinet. A few years back my kids ordered one from Snapfish that had pictures of them from the year - vacation, hunting trips, etc. It's my favorite because it's got a big handle. But I'll use whatever is available.

NFW I'd pay $250 for a carbon fiber cup and saucer.

Figured you weren't doing it, just trying to be humorous... I think I'll keep my day job. Anyhow, much appreciation towards your involvement with kids-- you're doing the work of the saints!

Not being much of a T-shirt guy, I (also) tend to mark places and occasions with mugs (or hats, but that's another thread). A few of my favorites:

Left to right: A coffee shop in Philadelphia that makes the best drip coffee I've ever had. The owner treated me to a 3 hour geek-out involving a tour of his roasting room and a PhD level explanation of coffee chemistry. Had to have a mug.

"Painted" by my 9 y.o. when, judging from the script, she was about three.

A local breakfast place, which has been closing (according to the owner/operator-- a good friend) for about 20 years. Figured I best get a remembrance before he shuttered the business, now the ink is half rubbed off the mug.

Here are my other two main mugs.
The one on the left was given to me by the workers at Lion Coffee in Honolulu as a going away present. I had gone there regularly for several years. I would always stop by after a long call night at Kapiolani Medical Center. It got to the point where I could call ahead and say "Hey this is Steve. I will see you in 10 minutes", and a cappuccino was waiting when I arrived. If I looked too dragged out, which was pretty often, they would refuse payment. Pretty cool.
The one on the right was recently given to me by my wife for Valentine's Day. It makes me chuckle every time I use it because in the morning it is the ultimate in irony.

I don't have a picture but way back when I entered a RR for the sole purpose of getting our climber to the bottom of the circuit's hill in reasonable position. 11 mile loop, hill was the last 1.5 or something miles.

After accomplishing my goal (me and all these big crit-looking guys were at the front for a very fast first lap) I climbed the hill leisurely, descended to the parking lot, changed, etc, and drove home.

The rest of the season riders would congratulate me on the spectacular race I did that cold spring day. Most of them knew me, knew that I don't climb, so to get 6th in such a hard race was just astonishing.

Astonishing to me too, of course.

I received a mug a few days later for 6th place in the race (as well as a pretty good sized check). I wrote a very thankful note, explained I couldn't possibly have gotten 6th if I was at home showering, and mailed it all back.

However that would have been a great mug had I actually earned it.

I googled but no one seems to have put a picture up of a similar mug.
