View Full Version : Paceline consensus bike...

I'm looking at a couple of frames here and got wondering what a bike would end up looking like if the Paceline forum built a bike by consensus.

I'll start with the frame being Titanium with a carbon fork. I'd guess it's a Legend Ti with a Serotta fork or a Moots. What's next?

Anyone?

Anything done by consensus is neither affordable nor usable :p

Do you mean NEITHER affordable nor usable? That's what I would guess.

A Moots with Record 10, Nemesis or Open Pro rims with Record hubs, right?

I'm pretty sure we can all agree that you need wheels with tires, handlebars and a stem. Even a crank of some kind, some pedals, and just possibly brakes, brake levers and a drive chain. And a saddle, and a seat post of some kind to hold that saddle. Those desiring multiple gears will insist upon some kind of gear box and shifters, and considering the context almost certainly that gear box will use derailleurs, freehub plus cassette, and those shifters will probably be integrated in some way with the brake levers.

Sure ain't gonna be a SRAM build.

Well, this would be a bicycle built FOR a committee.

If you're going Titanium:

I'd say you can narrow the builders down to:

Seven
Firefly
Spectrum
Hampsten
Eriksen
Moots

Probably forgetting others.

I'm good with the legend ti Serotta fork , but shimano/campy will never be a consensus

See, we already have a problem, carbon fork is a deal breaker

Consensus, like all "committee" activities is a failure before you start.

Just build what YOU like, then you alone will at least be happy

What I tried to point out is that we here have a consensus on what is really a very narrow definition of what a bicycle is. It's almost certainly not going to be a load carrying work bike; it's almost certainly not going to be a folder or have anything other than a 700C or tubular wheel. With a better than 90% confidence it won't be a touring bike and it won't have tires any wider than 28mm,if even that; it will have a derailleur drive train with at least 20 different gear selections, and it will not have fenders or mud guards. Oh, and it will have drop handle bars. And no bell. And absolutely, positively it won't be a recumbent!

In other words, it's not going to look like most of my bikes, except for the derailleur drive train and the drop bars (tires too narrow, wrong wheel size, those pesky mudguards, load-bearing structures, and of course that damned bell).

All I know is the guy riding it will have a rapha jersey, assos bibs, and a Paceline cap. In other words: terrible

My dad always owned Pontiacs.... (fortunately not the vibe)

I asked what his next car is going to be, he said probably a Buick. Poor guy :(

designing with numerous voices works, but it is often undermined by the client's lack of 'knowing what they want" aka Constraints.

This is a good example.

We've got: It's a bike. It's Ti. Got carbon fork.

What are you using it for? What are the key outcomes you want ? (lightweight? affordable? reliable?)

If we're going to entertain this hypothetical exercise.... let's do it right.

We all overthink this stuff so much we could each come up with our own 'consensus' bikes.

Yes, the entertainment value is what I was thinking would be highly enjoyable. We all know it won't be Sram.

It'll be Ti. It has a carbon fork. It'll be Campy. Probably Campy or Fulcrum wheels. Maybe a 3T for the contact points. It'll be what I want and my experience tells me I'll enjoy for many rides.

I'm just hoping for a fun ride/discussion from the peanut gallery. Oh, and it won't be disc brakes.

Would it be Campy 10? I've owned a few 10-speed Campy groups and loved them but my rides on Campy 11 tells me I do like the updated hood shape.

You threw off the consensus when you said multiple gears but certainly when you included integrated shifters.

It should be Sram. Sram makes the best road group ever.

You mean, integrated brake/shift levers are a shocking, revolutionary bleeding edge concept here on the Paceline? (Not that you will find anything like that in my stable...)
