SRAM 8/9 speed rear derailleur with a 10 spd road lever

Does it work? I know with Shimano it definitely works, but does it work on SRAM?

If I've got a cheap, say, 9 speed X5 rear, and a rival right lever, will they play together?

No, you need either a road RD or one of the MTB RDs that say "exact actuation".
