Friend has a 7900 crank he will sell me cheap. Is it a worthy upgrade it to go from Ultegra SL to 7900 cranks? The cost of replacement rings is somewhat of a deterent.

You can put non-6700/7900 rings on 6700/7900 cranks, it just looks really weird.

I dont know if its really an upgrade but its an easy swap.
And, when was the last time you wore out a set of chainrings?
Those rings do shift really well too.

Will I notice a difference in shifting?

Not really between brands but adding new ring could improve shifting depending how worn your other rings are

The reputation for excellent shifting of the 7900 comes from the crankset and front derailleur and front shifter. IMO just installing a set of the cranks will gain very little.
