We went today. We had the pleasure of meeting Tom Kellogg and Richard Sachs. What great guys!! What beautiful bikes!

E-Ritchie was kind enough to dole out some licorice whips to my daughters and field my wife's questions.

It is always special to meet men who obviously love what they are doing and take pride in their craftsmanship.

Quite a gathering. Della Santa across the row from Sachs. Vanilla just down the aisle, etc.

The Vanilla trike is trick.

Tom Kellogg had a really neat grey and red touring bike with matching fenders and built in bike racks. Wow. Would love to order one of those.

The Richard Sachs bicycles were particularly mezmerizing to me. This was the first time I ever saw one in person. These were the bikes we kept coming back to look at. They seem to have a timeless / deep quality about them.

Hmm. Four year wait per the man himself.

I was lucky enough to attend the show yesterday. I got the chance to meet Steve Rex, Bruce Gordon, Brian Bayliss, Tom Kellog, e-Richie, and Peter Weigle for the first time. I was glad to see Sacha from Vanilla again. They were all amazing people dedicated to the craft of building beautiful bikes.

I had taken some pictures at the show before finding out that no pictures are allowed unless I am a press member. In order to respect that request, I will not put out my pictures. Sorry :(

My favorites were:

Lovely blue signature bike and the GeeSawa from Richard Sachs.
All three of Peter Weigle's bikes, very well thought out and amazing craftsmanship.
Amazing white track bike from Vanilla; makes me want to pick up track riding.
White frame with Copper accents with Campy 50th anniversary gruppo from Bruce Gordon

I really enjoyed the show. My friend and I took a early flight up Sun. morning and spent around 3 hour wiping drool from our faces while we checked out the fantastic workmanship in the majority of the bikes displayed. The extra work that went in to the Bruce Gordon $13,500 touring bike was remarkable and Sacha's bikes really stood out too.
I got a huge surprise from E- Richie, after I introduced myself he tells me he has smoething he wanted to show me. I was a bit puzzled as to what he was going to show me, I turn around and he tells me he the unfinished frame hanging on his display in mine.  Totally unexpected!! Whoo-hoo!!!! Thanks E-Richie! You made day or then some!!

Thanks to all who were involved in the show, it was very well done.

It took a while to find the show. A lot of people, myself included, thought the show was in the main convention center, but it was in a tent in the south parking lot. I was really amazed to meet so many people I have only read about in print or on the web.

The highlights:

* I met e-Richie. He was really nice and I probably said something stupid. I got a set of stickers from him. Maybe I should have bought a set of lugs too, they are really cool, but I don't know what I would do with them. Maybe next year. I told him that I read all his stuff on this web site. He told me I should post so I listen to the man.
* I got a "Get in touch with your inner monkey" t-shirt from the Land Shark booth. I guess you had to be there.
* I talked with Mike Desalvo about his spotted powder coat frames. I was really impressed with some of his steel frames. I orignally thought they were Al because of the tube shaping. He gave me a boomarang for my daughter.
* I talked with Chris Kelly. He had the most amazing orange powder coated 29'er. He also had a frame for a local Colavita squad (not the pro team which rides Felts) that was really sweet, multi-color powder coat.
* I talked to Craig Calfee about his bamboo bikes. He had a urban bike that was really cool with wood fenders and blinking tail lights.

Other neat things:

The new Ghishallo is really light, but the seat tube was dented at the top. The Z3SL is really light. The skull paint job on the Parlee frame was really cool. The Vanilla trike was amazing, loved the canted rear wheels.

Really an amazing show. I guess San Jose is now the center of the American cycling universe. I can't believe I was on Sierra Rd. for the Tour of California and now I've meet all these great builders.

I guess the one let down was that it looked like e-Richie had red vines  and no twizzlers, but I could have been distracted by the beautiful lugs. :)

This fella's headbadge rocks.

Word has it that Grant Petersen was climbing Mt Diablo on the new prototype "Fatty Lumpkin" 650B "mountain" style tire. Word also has it that I was home plowing the driveway and no one noticed.

I forgot to mention Steve Rex. I talked to him for a while. His bikes are really clean.

Rue Sports, they had the most amazing skull head tube. It looked like a relief. I'm surprised there are no pictures of it any where.

Retrotec. I'm a sucker for top tubes arcing into the seat stays.

Really just an amazing show. I was there for two hours and I could have stayed much longer.

weigle and i typically hit the local staples
for crates, use 'em for the shows (the cirque,
etcetera), and just leave them at the hall when
it's over. it gets the rigs off the floor and looks
like memphis design if you really tax your
imagination. the cab to staples in san jose
cost more than the crates. oh - and they're
"Cranky-issimo" approved atmo. he's one

much love. they actually look great and are different enough from the bike that they don't confuse the process of looking at the bike yet don't draw attention to themselves. if you know what i mean. and yeah.. big points for the memphis design reference. wish i woulda kept that stuff.... ah the 80's.

Great photoshow!! Kudo's to TomT. I just installed a dsl line today after nearly 11 years of dial up. Never would have been able to see that with dial up, I like the speed.
