Interesting and inspiring story and cool picture about Indonesian's climbing greased poles topped with bicycles as part of a celebration. Maybe Paceliners can have a competition with greased poles topped with one each of a Kirk, KB, Firefly, Hampsten, DeSalvo, etc.

I'd climb a greased pole just for a call back from my framebuilder.

I remember seeing that sort of thing as a kid. My father told me "Watch the guys carefully, some of them will put sand in their pockets and when they get to the section of the pole that hasn't had the grease worn off by previous attempts they'll use the sand it to improve their grip..."

I actually thought about including IR in the bike list to see reactions, but then, well, I only have three hundred something posts. :)

Do they have the bike's geometry available at the base of the pole, so you'd know which ones to go for? What a bummer to do all that work, only to find out that the frame was just 0.5 cm too big.

Shane,

You can be irreverent even with 300 posts.

That does seem kind of dangerous though. And who gets to keep the bike? The entire team must have to fight it out any time someone wants to ride it.

Those are some seriously tall greased poles! I thought it was like a gym class pole.
Yeah, that looks like an injury waiting to happen.

What a bummer to get to the top and find a chinarello.

Absolutely appropriate, Tho, there is nothing at the top of the pole..

Maybe, but I hear that some of them come with a new Silca pump, Rapha yak-leather shoes and African hair-goat leather gloves.

I have a strong feeling that the bike's geometry and size are some of the absolute last things on their mind..
