The Park Tool Big a Blue Book of Bicycle Repair is IMO the best, most comprehensive manual you can have. It's provided me with invaluable, precise instructions regarding bicycle repair for years.

depends on how mechanically inclined you are. if you need the basics of wrenching, one of those books might be good, but for a good resource for all sorts of thing that's easy to follow, the park tools web page and sheldon browns archives are excellent. the park tools site excells at the modern stuff more IMO.
