View Full Version : How about a road rash thread? Yes - pics (not a lunchtime thread)

I was surprised to not find much in the way of road-rash threads on this board. I searched a few pages of results and only found references, no actual threads discussing the topic. So maybe it's time for one!

Here's one that's put an anchor on my life for the last couple days... not too bad, but just bad enough that I'm kind of gimped up.

http://i844.photobucket.com/albums/ab6/bkb0000/photo6_zps2e02d1fe.jpg

Patch on my hip/thigh, calf, forearm and wrist.. the patch on my hip is the worst, and the one I'm having the most difficulty with. I just let the others dry out (for better or worse).. the calf weeped for about a day, but the others sealed up quick. I consulted an EMT buddy who said to keep it slathered in neo and covered up for a "few days," then let it dry up. He didn't seem to think tegaderm was necessary. I've read articles that say it's better to keep them wet until they skin over- so 4-5 days under tegaderm, basically.

But what's going to get you at least mostly functional again fastest? I think a big patch of scab, though it might take longer to fully heal and be more likely to scar (I'm absolutely covered in scars anyway, so not exactly worried about that at this point in my life), might get me back into bibs faster and moving around easier faster than a huge patch of teg and gauze taped up and down my thigh.

Obviously if you've really burned off a deep, large area of skin, you're going to keep it covered. But what to do for these fairly minor-but-still-nasty patches? Would you scab over, tegaderm, or something else?

Let's see your road rash and repair techniques!

And yea - I've never shaved and I never will.

Here is one from years ago. Treatment was to get on a plane to Las Vegas the same afternoon. I only have this picture as my mother in law took it, the one on the leg and arse was way bigger but not a subject for the photographer. Spent the trip picking out stones whilst handing my money to the casino at the blackjack table!

Is this from the toe overlap?

Hah.. no injury from that. This was from a pedal strike on a hard turn. Entirely my own fault.

Although that TCO bike has almost sent me over a couple more times just since I posted that. Still a big question mark for me at this point.

Get the big sheets of Tegaderm on Amazon. Or you can make "ghetto Tegaderm" by taping on Saran Wrap and neosporin.
But like you said- keep it moist so scab doesn't form.

I have had more road rash than I care to remember from my pro/cat 1 days and the best tratment is Spenco second skin. It heals fast under this magic carpet.

I was going to say that also. But I can't find the large clear sheets of second skin like I saw before. I had a road rash just like the op once. I used a large sheet of second skin on it for a few days before it needed to be changed.

I actually do have pics of when I was sideswiped by a bus and went bouncing down the sidewalk on my arse. Not sure if will post because it's basically a pic of my arse with virtually no skin at all. Had pretty much a custom tagaderm diaper for about a week while it mostly healed.

Might also have a couple pics of my wife using a pocket knife to remove pebbles etc.

Highsided the bike overcorrecting a rear wheel slide as an oncoming car surprised me just a bit more than expected. Pilot error on my part - no pics but seeing how this thread is as new as my hamburger ass, shoulder, forearm and leg, I may be inclined to take a few and share the misery. I'm just damn luck nothing is broken as D2R2 is less than a week away now. I'll be the one with the stretch fabric all over the place and a sign taped to my forearm stating "this did NOT happen today". Remember kids, it's not "if" you will fall, it's "when".

Nope, it was a hospital shuttle on the worst roundabout in Boston during a tropical storm. He never even saw me as visibility was only a few feet. Bike was perfectly fine.
