Hi all,

I bought an older (probably 80's-90's, made in Taiwan) Schwinn road bike from Dave T. It arrived today with an extra tire. The tire's size is 27" x 1 1/8th. Does this relate to 700c?

I guess the real question is: Can I use regular 700C tubes? Or, do I need something different? If I do need a different size, please tell me what size I would need?

As always, thank you all in advance,

Steve

700c tubes will work, but you can't put a 700c tire on a 27" rim. Nashbar has some decent 27" conti's fer cheap!

Don't even try. The tubes are OK. But not the tires.

And the old Schwinn 27" and 26" was not the same as all the other 27" and 26". Found that out the hard way in the old days too. Trying to buy hardware store tires in the '70s for Schwinns in Appleton, WI. Didn't work. Had to go the Schwinn store. It's still there. The hardware store is gone.

Edit - By the '80s and '90s the sizes were the same. So don't worry. I am talking about the older '50s and '60s bikes. You ought to be OK with yours with a standard 27".

In the ISO sizing, the old standard 27 x 1 1/4 is 630 BSD. 700C is 622 BSD. So the bead seat diameter is 8mm less. The tubes are interchangeable. In fact, the same tube fits 38x650B (584 BSD) and 26 x 1.75 (559BSD).

As always, the bible for wheel/tire sizing information is Sheldon Brown:
