18inch would be slightly on the big side. Should fit though!! Do it. So I don't.

I just found out it's a bit too large. I would "need" a 17" IF Steel Deluxe.

Too bad for me. But you may now pull the trigger :D

I don't have too much knowledge on mtb so I have a question on how this bike compares to the modern, more recent mtb design. Consider that it doesn't have disc brake, and the age of the fork/shock, etc. Consider the components are 13 years old, is it still a better buy compare to the entry level AL frame mtbs?

Is the bike desirable because it is an IF? How much would this bike weigh?

Thank you for any information and my apology for hijacking the thread. I am asking just to learn more so when I search to CL I can also include the classic 26" design. Currently I am looking for a a used mtb to bike on the trails near my home and I am only looking at 29er hard tails.

It's a boutique steel hard tail. Yes, the value is that it is an IF in very good condition. If you have to ask those questions, I would suggest looking at Trek or Specialized's current offerings. Not trying to be a d_ck, but if you're looking for the lightest / latest / greatest for under $1k, then this is probably not for you.

EDIT - just saw your edit. Your question is not easily answered except to say you should ride / test out a few different types of bikes. I am fine with a hardtail 26'er (in my case a ti Steve Potts), but some of the people I ride with would never be caught dead on a hard tail steel or ti 26er. Full squish carbon 650b with a 5cm stem is where it's at, brah.

Tough quest. Try both is probably the right answer. I own a steel 26" IF and an Aluminum 29er. Some days/trails I prefer the IF, others I prefer the Niner. In my dreams, I'd get a custom steel IF 29er ;)

Pretty smokin deal.
My size and everything.
I'd get it if I didn't already have the dirt shark.
