View Full Version : Looking for an SPD commuting shoe

I'm looking for an SPD compatible commuting shoe that can pass as a shoe at work, doesn't need to be dressy, just needs to work with jeans & polo shirt. I'm using a pair of Specialized Sport RBX's:

but the powers that be would like something a bit more casual shoe looking. I like the Specialized as it fits well and is pretty stiff for my 29 mile somewhat hilly round-trip. Is there something else out there that looks a little less like a cycling shoe but retains the desirable characteristics of a cycling shoe?

not to throw a wrench in the works, but sounds like a terrible idea IMO. just leave a pair of regular shoes at work and change when you get there, no? what am i missing?

Last year I bought a pair of Keen Austin shoes from Sierra Trading post, for about $50. They are great shoes, maybe a little on the bulky side though.

Mission workshop sells quite a few casual looking shoes with cleat attachments.

and regular shoes.

I've tried DZRs and chromes and MTB shoes eventually I realized there is no reason to clip in on my commute and wear a dumb bike shoe the rest of the day.

Ditto, Keen Austin Pedal from Sierra Trading Post have been my commuting shoes for three years. I've got a wide foot so Keens fit me wonderfully and the Austin Pedals are a remarkably good cycling shoe. Not too stiff, but stiff enough for efficient pedaling. They are a bit heavy, but in this case that translates to a very durable, supportive shoe.

I would also like to use them when I head out with the family for the day, we tend to stop periodically & walk around. I was hoping for a compromise shoe that retains enough stiffness to deal with my daily commute but be casual and comfortable enough to walk around in at work or at play.

i guess i can understand that. looks like some decent options presented. i do like keen hiking shoes, if they look OK enough, give them a peak for cycling shoes.

It took me a while to buy-in to the "commuter-casual" shoe thing and bought the Keens out of curiosity as they were cheap (as mentioned). I had been commuting on Sidi Dominator megas that just didn't fit very well, but were the best I'd found for my size 15-EEEE feet. The Keens were MUCH more comfortable and, although probably not as pedaling-efficient as the Sidis, became my MTB shoes until I found of Lakes to try in my size.

While on the bike and riding I honestly can't tell they're not cycling specific shoes.

I have the Specialized sneaker-like SPD shoes. The cleats click on hard floors, and the shoes look weird because they are so small like cycling shoes, whereas I usually wear size 10.5-11 running shoes. Aesthetic no-go.

Eh...aesthetically, these are all pretty bad for anything but a bike shop, I think. One of the benefits of the almost paperless world is that if you have filing cabinets/drawers as part of your standard office furniture and don't fill them with paper, you can almost at least one drawer into a shoe/clothes drawer. Embrace the paperless world!

The Diadora Globe might do the trick for you. I think that they're more than stiff enough for casual rides.

I wear these a lot, and really like them both on and off the bike

Assuming you can deal with the shame of MTB shoes and a road frame

Given my advanced age, the fact that I actually stop at red lights & stop signs, and have been known to wear my softball team jersey (called the Noodniks) on my commute, I am well beyond shame.

Thanks for all the replies, I will be headed over to the local shops this weekend to see if I can find some of the shoes that have been recommended.

That's the pair I wear... on a road bike, none the less. I'm supposed to be shamed? There's no shame in wearing shoes that I can actually walk around in. If any roadie gives me a hard time, I'll push them over and run away (not like they are able to run after me).

I thought I read somewhere that keen was out of the cycling shoe business?

Interesting, that may explain why the only places selling them are clearance outfits. I better pick up another pair.
