View Full Version : Who is using a vintage bike as their main ride?

Something I have been considering myself. I have been blessed with many modern steel or titanium frames but there is something with horizontal top tube, lugs and skinny tubes that I cannot let go.

So who is using a vintage frame as their primary bike? Period correct or modern components? Hey post a picture while you're at it

My number one ride is a 1990 Merckx MXLeader, they don't get any better, IMHO..and yes, modern components..

And a 5/16 drill...

I have switched over to riding my Merckx as my main bike. Riding a mix of 8 speed record and chorus. I really love it over my Lemond, but sometimes the Ohio hills get the best of me and I wish I had more speeds...

Love that bike! That marque has always been one I have coveted ever since I saw a picture of one in a cycling book when I was a kid. That and a Guerciotti. I've got the Guerc now but a Redcay would be hard to come by.

In the CR world vintage is pre '83. Before indexed shifting, clipless pedals and aero brake levers. Another words, old school.

"keepers of the flame" are the current builders that still build with "traditional methods" sometime equiped with modern or classic kit.

So lets put classic as post '83 and still pre "modern". I'd be tempted to cut this of in the mid 90's myself, or roughly 20 years ago.

Define "vintage".

My oldest bike is a 1991 Nobilette, and it still gets about 1/3 of my miles. It started life with a 7spd freewheel (126mm axle width) and downtube shifters, and it is currently running a 9spd cassette (respaced to 130mm axle) with first generation Campagnolo Ergo shifters. Basically, as I've upgraded the drivetrain on newer bikes, the Nobilette has been getting the "hand me down" drivetrain components.

Nothing about that bike is vintage except the makers name... might be hard pressed in the classic catagory as well.

Granted but in this thread I was easing his burden of vintage by suggesting the frame being a reissue mx leader as stated below.

Verb 1. reissue - print anew; "They never reprinted the famous treatise"
reprint
reproduce - make a copy or equivalent of; "reproduce the painting"

Yes it does. It's lugged, horizontal top tube, maybe not the skinny steel tubes but I bet it's heavier than SLX so yeah it counts like vintage :D or classic or whatever. The debate is purely semantics from now on.

Nice bikes everyone. Keep them coming!

When you find The One, it's hard to ride anything else.

Up the canyon, down the mountain, to work or the corner store, if I'm on the road, I'm on this:

Not strictly 'vintage,' of course, but the frame pump and gumwall tires (apologies for misaligned labels) have to count for something, right?

Oh yeah, maybe I should mention that every single original component has been replaced at least once (mostly after wearing out or breaking) except the frame, the seatpost, and one waterbottle cage. This includes the original fork, which developed fatigue cracks after about 14 years of use.

It was built in 1995--a 20 year old bike is either old or vintage, and this one doesn't feel old at all.

All I ride are oldish lugged steel frames. I ride them slowly (especially up hills), but I ride them and nothin' else. I do hang Campy 10-speed triple on them, except for the Paramount, and it has Shimano 9-speed triple.

Another 'tweener--90% of my riding is on an early '90s filet-brazed Simonetti. Tange O/S--so not quite as skinny tubes, and 'modern' (Campy 10) gear and CF fork.

Retro-modern anyone?

All three of the bikes that I've put the most mileage on in the past 2 years are from the early 1980s and have 35 - 38 tires. My Trek 400 has SRAM 10 with bar end shifters. My Cannondale touring has most of its original 600 EX group, with the addition of 7 speed Ultegra bar ends and Nuovo Record/Ambrosio tubulars. My Columbus tubed Nishiki has Veloce 10 with a MTB triple to give me low enough gravel gears with the 12-25 C10 cassettes I have plenty of. I've never seen another Nishiki quite like it and don't know for sure how old it is, but it has no DT shifter bosses.

This was a team support bike I picked up from a fellow forum member, and had re-painted and set up as a fixed gear road bike. I think it's from the late 1980's. I cheated on the newer seat and newer sealed bottom bracket, other than that, all vintage. 95% of my riding is on this great ride. Unless, of course, there are some moun--tains to go over, but we don't have those in new york city.

there is something with horizontal top tube, lugs and skinny tubes that I cannot let go.

I gotta confess, I too love that aesthetic.
While not what I'd call my "main ride" I do own a circa 1986 Bridgestone 600 with horizontal top tube, lugs and skinny tubes that I ride probably 25-35% of the time. The only thing besides the frame, fork, & hubs that's really "period correct" though are the Diacompe brake levers and the Suntour downtube friction shifters, and to be honest I'd replace both of those with modern brifters in a heartbeat if I just rode that bike a tiny bit more...say 40% of the time. :)

Classic, vintage, modern, whatever. Most important to just ride what you enjoy riding. I have ridden modern (9 sp Campy, probably ancient to some), etc., but this still just works for me, as it always has.

If someone threw a De Rosa or whatnot my way, I sure wouldn't refuse to build it / ride it :)

Has had Shimano 7400, 7700, 7800, 7900 back to 7800. Next month it gets 9000 and new stem.

9000 and a ti stem would be ideal :)

How many of you guys ride those beauties in the rain?

I don't mind riding my Moots in the wet because titanium, and I don't mind riding my modern carbon or aluminum in the wet because second hand and because disposable.

I just couldn't see myself riding a beautiful lugged steel bike in the rain, and that means I'd never have one as my 'main' bike. Perhaps as a fairweather bike.

My primary bike is a 1989 JP Weigle built with Record 10 speed and Nitto shiny pieces...the Poprad only comes out to play in the rain. Record/Nemesis wheels with some Veloflex Roubaix tubulars are currently in service.
It just can't get any better.

I don't mind riding my 84 colnago in the rain any more than I did my alloy frames. It's dressed in record 10 so most of the hardware is carbon, ti and aluminum. The frame itself is steel, but joe bell did a fine job painting it and it has frame saver inside. I expect it will take a lot of rain and poor treatment to seriously rust. If it does, well she lived a long and useful life. Buy in cost was cheap too.

Why not? They're not made of sugar, and they won't melt. Especially not when they have fenders.

So it gets wet. Take some time and make sure the hubs, BB are ok, wipe it off, maybe clean the cogs, pulley, chain, CRs..and then ride it again..won't melt.

So much awesomeness. Happy to see so many Merckx, De Rosa, Sachs, Serotta, and many many other US builders!

I am beginning to think that I could use my Corsa Extra as my primary ride and not let myself bite by the carbon bug. After all I am not racing and looking at my last rides in the Ardennes - on a vintage steel Masi - I barely average 25 km/h. But boy I have never had so much fun on a bike. So to paraphrase someone I know the frame is not the frame or is it the frame is the frame?

1989/90 10 Speed Imports Era LeMond Tourmalet. Mixture of various Campagnolo 9 speed. I was to be using this as my main ride, and it did ride so very well. I was in the Process of building up a more compatible wheel set when we discovered a potential problem. I don't want to highjack this thread so I'll create another. I know the pic isn't that great, but this is after I made it fit me better over the previous owners setup. Added a Cinelli 1A 110mm stem, and a Cinelli Giro 42 bar.

In 20 years, there won't be a thread about a vintage Dogma being used as a daily ride, yet your Corsa will still be going strong. Steel bikes have soul! Carbon is great for racing and getting replaced every couple years as trends change, but steel bikes like your Corsa still envoke that emotion deep inside that inspires you to ride.

Had to replace rear derailleur in a rush with a Shimano but getting an old campy next month. Basic bike but still makes me smile. Nope...checked the lineage with JP himself. There are the usual chips and scrapes that go with an older bike and don't show in the photo. But hey, it's patina.

Your Tommasini Competizione is also quite beautiful. I don't see too many of them on the web, and have never seen another one in person so I think they are kinda rare. You see a lot more Prestige and Super Prestige models from that era. Here's what little I know about these fantastic bikes:

I sent pictures of the frameset to the Tommasini factory and received a prompt reply from Barbara (info@tommasini.it). She confirmed it was a 1991 Competizione with Columbus SL tubing. She said these were made for the US market only in the '90's in order to "offer a top quality frame like the Prestige with a more competitive price". The BB shell is stamped 02 US.

What sets the Competizione apart is the "Quattro Colori" paint scheme. Its very distinctive and well executed. Yours is even more rare; it has the Candy Apple Red base color while mine has the Pearl White base color. The chrome on these bikes is usually top quality.

I've seen examples on the web from as early as 1989 and as late as 1993. I don't know if that is the actual Competizione time frame or not.

The ride quality as you know is fantastic. Tommasini's have excellent racing geometry and are a joy to ride. Thanks for sharing yours on the Paceline.

2016 bump! This thread is so nice that I hope nobody objects. All of my bikes are "vintage", but weather permitting, this one is currently my go-to ride:

https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8725/17077703099_b4f795261f_b.jpg

That was when I had just picked it up and it was looking really, really good. Since then, I've ridden it a considerable amount - that's what they're for, right? - and it looks worse for wear, particularly the wheels (dang anondized rims!). The C Record stuff is beautiful to look at and not altogether bad to use, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't constantly tempted by 8 or 9-speed Record and brake lever shifters.

Daaaaaaaammmmmmn. thats nice!

I love the frame color and the build. :)

Bob, where is the stunning Colorado II that Joe Bell painted blue?

I had to cut down on bikes because I might be moving, as much as I liked the Colorado I needed to keep the Stanyan since it is more versatile ( accepts larger tires and has braze ons). I promised the guy I purchased it from that if I should sell it I'd give him first dibs to buy it back. It was a difficult decision, the Colorado was a high performance frame. BTW I kept the original campy pump head you gave me and used it on another pump I have for my Richman. Thanks Daryl!

Thanks. Paint was done by Alan Wanta about six months ago.

Oh yes. Or go back to 7400 cranks.

Bike looks great as is, however a 7400 or 9000 crankset would really set it off

Haha, no worries Bob. I know that you are serious about serial monogamy with your bikes. ;). That one was my favourite of your flings...so far. The pump head is yours to do with as you wish. Anytime bob. Always looking forward to see what bike will darken your doorway next.

My main ride is a '99 Serotta Atlanta...does that count as vintage? It's set up with Campy 10sp mostly black components. I'm really not to worried about period correctness or weight (within reason). All my bikes are "work bikes", ie: ridden hard and worked on when they need it.

I look at vintage being subjective with our own age, personally I think of a frame made before Y2K can be qualified vintage (as opposed to antique
100 years). Like you I appreciate period correct bikes but build mine up for practical application though keeping it aesthetically pleasing.

All I ride are oldish lugged steel frames. I ride them slowly (especially up hills), but I ride them and nothin' else. I do hang Campy 10-speed triple on them, except for the Paramount, and it has Shimano 9-speed triple.

In no particular order:

My DS is a new bike but built the old way you describe -- lugs, skinny tubes, horizontal TT, quill stem. So I'll consider that as counting.

Sorry, off topic, but how is that pump staying without some velcro or something? I've got the same setup in mind for my Bianchi, but it seems like it will fall easily when I hit bumps because of the head tube angle.

ETA JUST FIGURED IT OUT.
You must have a peg, huh. Stupid me.

Some slick rides in here.
While it's only ONE of my main rides, I am beginning to favor taking this young lady out... ya, the Dura Ace doesn't belong, but I think it looks

I wouldn't call my 1998 Waterd 1200 vintage, maybe old school. It has survived three carbon bikes that ended up on Craigslist. Sorry, no photos on my IPad. It's black with red and silver trim. Dura Ace nine speed.
