If you have extensive experience riding both of these frames, I'd be very interested to hear how you think they compare: geometry, road feel, etc. Thanks so much in advance for your thoughts.

I have a S 585 and a friend have a M 595. I cannot tell you how they compare in terms performance or geometry but there are some notes/facts I got:

1. M595 F/F/HS weighs less than S 585 F/F/HS however, with the e-post it weighs heavier than the S585 with Look ergo5 post (180g)
2. You have to live with the ISP if not you can purchase the seat post which was an optional for the 586
3. 585 uses 27.2 seat post
4. If purchasing the 595 used make sure you have additional spacers/elastic bands to adjust seat height and comfort after you cut the seat mast. Also check for cracks on the seat mast itself.
5. Both uses tapered steer tube so replacement of fork can be difficult. I did read Caad uses tapered forks but... you wouldnt want to do that to your look.

I think that the biggest difference is that the 595 has a seat mast and the 585 uses a conventional seat post. You probably won't go wrong either way. I have a 585 ultra and it is a very nice bike.

Don't you have to use the Look carbon Ashtabula crank with the 595??

I nearly pulled the trigger on a 595 from a fellow boardie.

Very similar to the 585 in geometry. The seat mast tiny cracks issue was the biggest I saw in researching the 595 online, something Look fixed with later generations of the frame. Appeared to have been an issue with the first batch and they revised the carbon layup in subsequent model years.

I read some seat-of-the-pants reviews that the 595 felt stiffer, but I doubt that was the reality in any meaningful way.

Both are excellent frames and I guess it comes down to your comfort with seatmasts. I ended up going with the Time VXR, and have a hard time thinking the 585 or 595 could have been any better than that bike.

No, you're thinking of the 695.

I don't think any 585s use a tapered fork...mine doesn't, anyway.

The crown race is built in to the fork crown on both.

Some 595s have the Look Headfit deal that only works with matching forks. Not sure about newer 585s...

Don't overlook the underrated 586...sure, it isn't lugged, but I think mine rides better than my 585.

Given all of the above, I have a 595 in large that I should probably sell. Of course it's boxed up in a storage facility along with all of my other worldly possessions, so it might be a few weeks/months before I can get to it!

there is no reason to hoarde both a 595 and 585. personally i would sell the 595 as IMHO the 585 is more revered. yes, the 595 initial years had mast crack issues. if yours is not cracked by now I would not worry about future crack under normal usage.

eventually when my riding partner finally orders a Moots CR and sells his 2006 grey 585 large 56.0 I will let you know for first dibs. then you can sell the red one and achieve contentment.

achieve contentment

Contentment is just one bike acquisition away! I'm sure of it!

Kidding aside, please do let me know, though I'm surprised by how much I like the red.

I've had both and found the 595 to be a bit stiffer than the 585. The 595 had an almost dead feeling IMO and I never really warmed to it. The 585 on the other hand (base model) was fantastic! If I hadn't already had a C50 that rode just a tiny bit better, I would have kept the 585.

Anyway, congrats on the bike Ari. I hope the move has gone well!

I've owned 3 x 595's and own one now ( that I had retrofitted for internal DI2 ).

The " dead " feeling I believe is the fact that the frame is so neutral, balanced and just spot on. It's not at all dead, just right.

Also, the tube set of the 595 are much more shaped than the 585. Not sure what effect that has on the ride, but they are very modern looking.

Thanks, Tex. The move, like all moves, has been a complete disaster. But it's starting to work itself out. We finally found a nice house to buy. And even though we can't occupy until November, the place we're renting in the meantime is pretty great. Also, I'm hoping to do some trail riding, which is plentiful here, later this week. And it's wonderful to be relatively close to family and old friends. All of that said, I forgot how much I hate humidity -- I mean, HATE it -- and we miss California a lot. Still, I've experienced enough good fortune over the past year that I can't complain (except about the humidity, which is an abomination).

I pretty sure this is true for all the 585s.

I stand corrected :)

I had owned a 585 for many years. Still own a 595 and a 586 (hanging as a frameset in garage).

I found the 585 to be a very predictable bike. I loved riding it when I wanted a relaxed ride, regardless of weather or ride condition. There was something about the bike that gave it a balanced feel of carbon stiffness and road shock absorption. I loved road racing on this bike because I never felt beat up after the finish.

The 595 - I still have it and I love riding it. It's very responsive and lively and it responds well to aggressive riding. It's a punchy bike that's great for crit racing. I ride this bike mainly during mid-week group rides.

For weekend riding, I usually grab one of the Moots'. It's definitely not the lightest but it has the best feel. And what better way to enjoy your ride when you're riding with your friends on the weekend? And that's mainly why I'd sold my 585 as it was replaced by the ti bikes.

Hope this helps......
