While I realized that beyond being able to calculate gear inches, and having a sense of what they mean in terms related physical effort, I had no idea what the term actually means. So I looked it up. Surprise!

Gear inches are pretty neat. I find that for a lot of newer riders, they do not get it or relate, so I usually discuss straight ratio's as they relate to the gearing they are riding. This most often comes up (lately) in choosing a different cassette v. swapping to a compact. We can discuss the similarities in gearing as a percentage of stoke number and equate them to see what fits their needs.

They seem to grasp this and can relate to it better.

It's on the internet if you look.

Back in the day when real men rode high wheelers one turn of the pedals would move the bicycle the same distance as the circumference of the driven wheel. On modern bikes if you have a 24 tooth front chainring and a 24 tooth cog on the rear (or any 1 to 1 combination) then one turn of the pedals would turn the rear wheel one revolution and the bike would travel 26 inches or the circumference of the wheel. If you had a 48 tooth front and a 24 tooth rear then the bike would travel twice the circumference of the wheel or 52 inches.

back to English class and careful reading for you. He said two things, one of which translates into an 8+ inch in diameter wheel. Maybe that's what he intended, but I doubt it.

Oh yeah, I forgot. So 26" is more like 82"

I was in a hurry, but you know what I meant, right?
