One of our regular riding buddies is moving to the DC area where he will be commuting to work. Any suggestions for a can't miss parting gift for a future commuter. I was thinking fenders or bag. This is a last minute deal so some bags are out of the question. If fenders, what kind? He will be riding a Ridley that has eyelets. Any other ideas? TIA

I'm a fan of DiNotte and thought of that. He has a Magicshine front light but maybe the DiNotte tail light would be good.

If you're getting him a tail light, why not get the one with a camera in it since he'll be riding in traffic? I don't remember the name, but i think it was on kickstarter.

How much are you looking to spend? The best commuter gift I can think of is:

I seriously love this bag.

Bags, rack, etc. are a personal thing and need to work well together so best left to the user to choose. A gift cert would be best for that scenario. I like the Dinotte light recommendation, I've wanted one for a long while, but can't make $$ work out, if the price is acceptable that would be a great gift.

Is he moving himself? If so, something small (or a gift certificate) may be preferred. Usually when I've moved, I've tried like crazy to jetison stuff, and new stuff to move might increase the hassle.

If not the gift card, here are some ideas

new heavy duty lock
light/flasher
hi viz jacket (if he's going to be commuting all year)
ultra-light (hot weather) jersey if DC is going to be much more warm/humid than where he's coming from

I've never seen a rack that the ortlieb qr2 system won't play with. True on the preference part though.

At the same time I think lighting choices are also personal preference. When it comes down to it, almost all cycling choices have an element of personal prefernce.

My wife commutes with Ortlieb panniers and they are the best. My preference comment really relates more to rack type (lowriders or no, front of rear, does it fit the frame with sufficient bag-heel clearance) and saddle bag vs. trunk bag vs. pannier.

Agreed, lights are also personal, but the Dinotte is the cat's meow for daytime commuting.

Its done. Ordered the DiNotte 300R. Thanks for the ideas, I decided that racks, fenders, bags were too individualized whereas the light is a no-brainer.

Moving to DC? Poor chap... I'd get him a bottle of Scotch to help ease the pain :D

Do you know the commute that he will be doing? I am a daily bike commuter in DC. It is the best way to get to work. For the summer, though, some anti-perspirant could be a good gift.
:)

A lock? My experience is that as long as it is locked you are fine.

Fenders are great for our winter and spring ... and summer. And a little in Autumn
