I used a couple of them. They aren't secure from theft -- you can cable-lock the bike to the bracket but the bracket can be removed in a few seconds, and there are usually tie-downs in a truck or suv to lash a cable to.

The base on mine came a little bit loose from the top. The shims on the quick release were a pain and always took both hands to work right, so you had to use your shoulder to keep the bike in position. In the back of a pickup this was ok but you had to be in the bed. Anywhere up higher, I'd be very skeptical.

These are designed for a lot of flexibility in type of axle, but that's more of a MTB thing than road.

The ones that I really liked are http://www.biketote.com. For an SUV you can get a crossbar that has lever-actuated pressure grippers on each end to fit it snugly in place. The crossbar can then take a big range of fork holders, rear wheel holders, and loose front wheel holders. We used one inside a pickup truck as a race support system, installed it in a Suburban for long-distance travel, and actually mounted it upside down in the roof of a high-roof Mercedes Sprinter so the bikes hung down from it. worked fine in each version.
