So, my commuter/utility bike is a SOMA Double Cross. I have Campy 10 on it like on all my bikes. I have been hauling both kids in the double trailer recently. DC is a flat city unless you go to the zoo with an addition 100+ pounds behind you.

What is the cheapest Campy 10 compatible compact that is not a waste of time? FSA ? (Old Potato, I believe, vouched for compatibility. Other thoughts?

Sora level shimano with BB probably best combo of price, decent BB and chainrings. FSA is pure junque.

Hey I have campy 10spd square taper and instead of changing everything out I just switched out the from chain ring to a 50T from stronglight ct2 I believe and I am very happy with it.

Old Potato, so that Shimano/Campy combo works? Cool.

CSiowner, what small ring could you get to work. For the bike here, I have a T/A crankset that I want to swap out anyway b/c it is 180, but I have a square taper Centaur 10 on my bike in CO and would love a compact there, as well.

Just got a Mirage compact NOS off the bay for $32. New BB under a hundred.

This is what I would do.

Centaur bb and a mirage, veloce or centaur compact.

So I went the cheapest route I have 170 campy cranks carbon 135 mm so I changed just the front one out I didnt need anything smaller than a 39 on the small chain ring because I have a 13-29 cassette so a 50t front gave me a better average and I really enjoy it all I had to do was re-adjust the front derailer

I bought a Gossamer before I heard much about FSA - the bb was crap, but I had no complaints about the crank itself. A few years later, I was talking tothe FSA rep at NAHBS, and he handed me a few replacement cups (correct term?- plastic bits that fit inside the bb), they broke when I installed them.

Sure, 10s is 10s...

The smallest chainring available for 135mm bcd Campy cranks is 39t. You can't get anything smaller.

The one in my parts bin?

It's NIB. Lemme see what it is. If you want it, we'll "negotiate" an agreeable price.

I've used about 3 fsa cranks (gossamer, energy and their slk-light) in the past and have no complaints about them, well the gossamer was sorta heavy.

Sometimes you could find fulcrum cranks for a good price if you're patient, and they have that nice narrow campagnolo stance width.
