View Full Version : Will my CAAD9 accept wide rims?

I'm considering pulling the trigger on some HED Stingers, and it dawns on me that the CAAD9 frameset to which they will be mated pre-dates the widespread adoption of "wider-is-better" wheels. Anyone have problems with wheel rub on this frame or an earlier gen CAAD? I'm going to be running 23 or 25 tubulars.

I'd measure the chainstays and such, but the bike is still boxed up for a trip I'm taking, and besides that doesn't really take into account wheel flex and the like.

I've also done Belgiums and A23s with 25s, and have never been in danger of rubbing.

What kind of fork though? I have a lot of trouble with rub on my 2011 Super Six fork and Fulcrum racing ones with Vittorias in 25 or Conti GPs in 25. Had to drop down to a 23 Grand Prix to stop the rubbing. I have some Roval 60 clinchers on there now but with Specialized turbo 23's. I don't think much more would fit.

CAAD9 frame/fork SHOULD be fine with 23mm rims with big 25mm tires. Never a problem using HED C2 + Michelin ProRace4 25s, which measure 27.5mm in that setup.

Can't imagine that a similar setup with tubulars would be an issue.

Belgium C2 are 25mm, Stingers are closer to 27mm.

My CAAD9 took 27s no problem

In case anyone owns a CAAD and is wondering, fat Firecrest rims fit just fine in there. They have 23mm tires glued up now, but there is ample room to pop on the 25s that should be arriving soon.
