After riding this morning I noticed a thin alloy ring between the hub and the cassette had come loose. I think it is referred to as the spoke retention ring.

Anyone know if this actually structural or if it is just a precaution??

Not sure what first gen is but if it has the screw on end cap you can adjust the preload which should tighten everything up.

I think the first firecrest were 2010 vintage

Does the end cap opposite the cassette body have a 2mm screw in it? If so then try adjusting the preload. Zipp has good documentation and videos on their site.

Not exactly "structural", but I personally would reseat the ring before riding. Not a difficult thing to do. Spoke tension keeps the spokes slotted, but impact or whatever could allow a spoke enough slack to pop out. The snap ring helps prevent that from happening. So, not critical, but an unnecessary risk to take for something so easily fixed.

This is one iteration earlier than I think you have, but if you have radial laced drive side yours should be the same. Vid explains mechanics. http://youtu.be/-4fjYeq-Pwk

That was helpful...the snap ring somehow broke

Do you know if it is easy to get spares quickly?

A local shop that has a high volume Tri business might have a snap ring in stock, or get one from a distributor overnight. If that turns out to be a bust, call the Zipp Online store/support line and ask for Denham Grey. Denham manages the store and if anyone can get something to you quickly it's him.

I would be aware of potential flange failure. They are known for that. I have one here as we speak, the ring cracked as well. They redesigned them this year and they ditched this design.

YES....

That ring is a part of the structure.

Take it some place and have it fixed and inspected. It should not have come off.

The retention rims IS structural according to Zipp. To put it back on you actually have to detention that whole side. Pop it back on and then retention it back up. Also the procedure to properly replace those spokes. I'm not a big fan of those hubs in general. New design is way way better.
