Hi all, a buddy of mine has a guy trying to rehab an early '70's "Mariella" and they are stymied as to what tool they need to remove the BB in the picture. Gear set is Campy, crank does not say what it is. Can you take a peek and see if you can identify this and tell me what tool would be needed to remove it?

I have no idea what brand the BB is but one would remove it with a good ol' fashioned lock ring tool.

I would use a tubing wrench and then replace the cup with something more standard.

BB lockring tool

yep that is the one. use to be included in "tool kit" provided with new bike. very simple pressed steel tool. i think you could also use a pair of "water pipe" pliers to remove. if i did not have the tool i would use the pliers method.

spanner wrench. no home mechanic should be without one.

BB lockring tool

Yup, maybe with a stein tool to hold it on there. Probably lefty-loosey

Unfortunately, not on this one (or the plier type, either), since they only work on cups/rings with an even number of holes/notches.

You'll either have to use one of the single tooth lockring tool, or maybe better yet the Park lockring tool, which has three teeth to match the three notches:

If you can't get it to move with just the lockring tool, find a piece of pipe to slide over it the tool and give yourself a longer handle. Get somebody to hold the lockring tool on the BB cup, start applying weight to the end of the pipe, and let mechanical advantage gradually do all the work.

Yep to the above. That cup isn't Campy. Any thread markings on it? As noted above, if English thread (the far superior one, since it doesn't loosen until you want it to :) ), it would read 1.370 (or 75) x 24, and will be LH thread (or CW to loosen). Check Sheldon (http://sheldonbrown.com/cribsheet-bottombrackets.html) for other threading, but the majority of others will be std. RH thread. You could use a punch carefully to loosen. Used to back in the '70s :)

That looks like it might put up a fight. I have a chisel that is cranked at the end that works great for this. I got it from my dad, who probably bought it to take his bb out. There are also a wide variety of fixed cup removal tools that just use friction on the cup itself. Simplest is a bolt, nut and a big stack of washers. Problem is that if it's Italian, you are going to need a left hand thread bolt and matching nut
