Long Story short a crack develop in the chain stay of my Specialized Allez Columbus Foco tubing. Fortunitly it didn't crack completly off and I suffered no injury. Can this be repaired for a reasonable $$? Any recommendation on a frame builder in the SoCal area?

That's pretty serious. Depending on the year of your bike, a competent repair may run near what the frame is worth

Their website states Specialized has a limited lifetime frame warranty for the original owner, but seat stays and chain stays are only warrantied for 5 years.

I'm all for a manufacturer covering their product, but this sure looks like it started with a gouge from a chain. That said, I'll bet you can find something similar for pretty cheap on ebay.

My understanding, if they where to warranty the frame, they would replace with a new one. Normally i would be fine with this, but it wouldn't be a steel Allez.

Found one my size, my color choice. Just purchased a fridge and the wife was you have other bikes you can use.

I had a cracked chainstay on my steel mountain bike. A friend, who was handy with welding, merely welded over the crack. It lasted for years, until the frame failed elsewhere.

Find a quality welding shop than can weld thin tubing and give them a shot.

It was probably stored next to a carbon frame that essploded and the blast wave from the carbon frame caused this one to crack. Happens all the time.

He is in San Diego/Spring Valley with Joe Bell, it looks like he no longer builds steel frames, but he does or did the tube replacements and repairs and adding braze-ons to steel bikes the Joe Bell is repainting. I don't know what you would consider reasonable, the repair is likely costly but those steel Specialized frames were nice ones. Sorry for your loss

Tony Martin, welcome to the forum!

What training plan do you use? I too would like to have enough power to crack my chain stays.

I blame the group ride, all that time spent with carbon frames. Some how contaminated my bike with thr explosive chemical found on carbon frames. ;)

Not familiar with frame repair cost, but my wallet would be happy at $200. Paint won't matter as much. I would be fine with the repaired area just primered and ride it like that.

Bill moved out of the Spring Valley shop at the beginning of the year. JB's still there but Holland Cycles is now in the Kearny Mesa area of San Diego.

I don't think Bill would be a good candidate for your repair. He's only working in Ti now along with the composite project we're doing together. And...He's really busy these days!

A better source may be Rob Roberson who does the repairs & braze ons for JB. Not sure that he'd want to take it on but I'll have him take a look at your photos and let you know if he's interested.

Thanks Mike, If he needs better photos i can bust out the "real" camera. I plan on tearing down the bike this weekend if time permits.

YGBSM... Had to look this up lol

YGBSM
During the Viet Nam war, US pilots were getting shot down because of surface to air missile SAM sites. In an effort to counter-act the losses, the USAF came up with a tactic called the hunter-killer team concept. This tactic required a pilot, the hunter, to fly low over an area of suspected SAM sites in order for the sites to start shooting. Once the SAMs started shooting, pilots in follow-on aircraft, the killers, dropped bombs and fired missiles to disable the SAM site. When told of the new tactic at a pre-brief, one pilot was reported to respond, "You've gotta be ····tin' me!" The term is associated with Wild Weasel pilots who flew F-105s, F-4Gs, and currently F-16s.
Currently, the term is used as an exclamation of shock or disbelief.
"Hey, dude, I heard there was another hurricane headed towards NoLo"

Bet it can be done? It WAS done on my Bridgestone MB-3! I removed the crank, BB, and rear wheel and my buddy merely laid a bead of weld over the crack, and although welding skills are part of his talent set, he's no expert. I didn't even bother to paint it afterwards. Worked like a charm.

Cr*p welds/too much heat. A strong rider brings out the foibles in frame construction.
