Item if found, how much should one realistically look to pay, not going the inflated ebay route?

Are you referring to the 1st or 2nd generation? 1978 was a transition point for the Super Record rear derailleurs and I've seen both 1st and 2nd generations with the "Pat 78" date stamp.

Pristine examples will usually bring $250 plus for the 1st gen and $100-$150 for the 2nd gen.

Yea, it would be the first generation. $250 seems to be the going price for one of em. oh well.

What makes ebay the "inflated price"? It's market price as that is what someone PAID for them. (not simply asking price).

While you may find a bargin here @ Paceline from time to time, ebay is most certainly "the market".
