Watching stage 12, TdF, why do the stop signs say 'stop' and not whatever stop in French is? Saw the same in other Euro countries. ???

1968 Vienna Convention on Road Signs.

What, do you think EU bureaucrats in Brussels just sit on their hands?

So us goofy American tourists know it's a stop.
Actually I think that's an EU standard.

Because the french adopted the word into their language long ago, long before the EU existed, probably before the EU was even a dream, or nightmare depending on your perspective. Lots of english words adopted into french. Besides, it fits on the signs more easily, instead of arrętes vous for example.

Some signs in Quebec don't even bother with the English.

True story...When I was a teen-aged idiot (as opposed to the adult idiot I am now) I was in Montreal to see PIL play and couldn't find my way out of an underground parking garage because 'sortie' didn't register with me.

Being male and proud, I just waited for someone else to park and followed them...

For the same reason the roadways have all of those arrows reminding people to drive on the right side of the road. The English.
