Wow, some awesome performances over the years. He was a great live guitarist to watch. I was planning on seeing him at this past jazz fest but didn't get to go, now I'm really sorry. RIP

I always felt he was underrated - only number 69 on Rolling Stone's list of all-time great guitarists. RIP.

I'd heard (from a reliable source) many of his recording sessions during the 70's involved him being nude (in the studio) with a liberal amount of hookers/blow.

He lived hard (in much the same way many of his peers from the 70's did) and it certainly came across in his music.

Amazing musician.

First 3 Johnny winter records get a lot of airtime at the house.

Saw him several times in the 70s/80s. Went to see him last year on tour; wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised his guitarwork was still awesome.

RIP John Dawson Winter III

Tremendous phrasing, man of a million licks, unique rhythm parts playing partial chords. One of a kind.

A shame, great bluesman.

I did monitor mix for him one night at the Paradise in Boston when his normal side stage sound man couldn't keep up with old Johnny warming up for the show. He was curled up in a fetal position in the tour bus toilet.

To bad - great guitarist, as is his brother, Edgar -
Don't think he received the recognition he was entitled to.
Supposedly he lived a very colorful life - rip

Fortunate to have seen him play many times, and especially in his heyday. He never abandoned his roots/tradition.

RIP Johnny Winter.

I've seen him many times. This cut shows even old and blind he still knew his way around an old guitar. The look on Derrik's face is to funny!

I hadn't heard. Sad, but the way he lived, I'm sure he felt like anything over 30 was probably bonus time. They should bury him with one of those classic reverse thunderbirds he always played. I bought a regular thunderbird at a garage sale in the early '80s to try to sound more like him. Didn't help. I only saw him a couple times. Even if he wasn't so good himself, the way he helped Muddy Waters make those last few albums and get back in the spotlight would have made for a musical life well lived.

RIP Johnny.

I owned his famous three sided double album for years, and it was used many a time for what open double albums were used for at the time, if you know what I mean.

One of my favorite recordings of his was him coming out and just blasting the audience at the Bob Dylan 30th anniversary celebration with his awesome version of Highway 61. Hot.
