View Full Version : Any interest in a Paceline cycling cap?

jmoore

I have done a few sets of custom cycling caps. I just got my last round out the door this week. The caps were 3 panel summer weight caps made by Walz (a Blue Skewer member) and everyone loves them. They are super comfortable and finished with the typical Walz high quality.

I have spoken to the mods and been given the green light to do a round of Paceline caps, if there is enough interest. I don't have a final design worked up yet, but I'm liking this retro Renault cap, but with the Paceline in place of Renault and a few other minor tweaks (maybe a banana)

http://content.prendas.co.uk/media/catalog/product/cache/1/small_image/400x/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/2/0/20121004-renault-retro-cotton-cycling-cap_2.jpg

Barring that, we could just keep it very simple using black, white and yellow and do simple stripes over the top with the Paceline maybe on the brim and sides.

https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSajYPn8c7c1sXPl_BObCUHXMWf7GopX YIBqkys9d3aHjWGRs_uww

Pricing would likely be in the $21-23 range shipped. This would include a $1/cap donation to the site.

If you are interested, please let me know and I'll get it done. I need probably 2 dozen confirmed orders to make the pricing work. Turnaround from approved design is approx 6 weeks, so these would be delivered in Sept sometime.

PS - The designs are just my first throw out there. I hesitate to open this wide open to a design contest, but I'm open to design suggestions

If you are a graphic designer and would be willing to do the legwork on the design, it would lower the cost significantly. I have a graphic designer but she charges $40/hour. Getting all this ready would take at least 4-5 hours so it would be a significant cost savings to have that work done in-house, so to speak.

I have reached out to Walz to see what they charge for design work but haven't heard back yet.

I prefer the Renault homage....would look good/simple/bold/slightly different than the sea of world stripe caps out there.

Please let's have the graphic on BOTH sides of the bill (pet peeve).

The template graphic work is pretty simple AI stuff...I could do it if someone who really knows what they are doing can't.

Doesn't Walz only print on pre-determined/select styles in cotton, or full print in microfiber??

All right then. This idea seems to have some merit. We have a dozen or so "i'll take one" comments. We need at least a dozen more.

To reduce the back and forth, I am going to make some executive decisions.

1. The cap will be a three panel cap from Walz. I will see what the options as far as microfiber vs cotton blend are.
2. Cap design will be an homage to the Renault cap in black, yellow and white.
3. There will be simple Paceline logos on both sides of the brim and likely both sides of the cap.
4. There will be a small banana somewhere.

I would be in for one. Maybe a bad question but does Walz do specific sizing or one size fits all? I have found that one size fits all in regards to cycling clothing means it fits anyone under 170lbs, which I am not!

Walz offers two sizes: S/M and L/XL

Walz sizing here:

FWIW, I wear a 7 3/8 hat and I can wear a Small/Medium with no issue. Due to the construction, a L/XL fits me fine as well. It's just a bit looser.

Hey J.

First off, thanks for the legwork.

I'd love something simple, preferably black.

Know you're getting more input than you ever need.......BUT

If you threw out a few options, one that checked the box for the multi color Banana/Renault crowd....and one that appealed to the more conservative with a minimum pre-paid buy in to trigger the order for either, and if we don't reach the number it doesn't get ordered.

Just a thought.

Thanks,

Geoff

The problem with two cap designs is it doubles the minimums and doubles the work for the graphic designer. And it injects more confusion into the discussion.

So we will stick with one cap design for now. If we get good response then we can do another round of something less vintage in the next round.

http://redkiteprayer.com/2010/12/the-cycling-cap-2/

Like RKP says- real caps are 4 panel and short bill.
The real deal caps are made by Apis in Italy.
One size, don't fit big heads all that well.
Minimums are large- like 10 dozen.
But caps should be bought 4 at once- not 1.
When a cap is faded' worn looking, etc.- replace.
Also, caps tend to lose it when washed. Another reason to buy multiples.
Just throw away anything tatty.
You can get Apis caps through Vermarc or Giordana.

Fully custom cotton - different color panels and brim + silk screened graphics - require 50 caps. By the time the caps are produced we will be moving towards fall, so cotton might be preferable.

Jason…This is simple graphics…Walz will send you a template…use AI and add the lettering and simple banana graphic. We will need the font and/or vector files of the desired Paceline "logo" and a vector file of the banana graphic.

Renault files here, if we want to work off that type: http://www.brandsoftheworld.com/search/logo?search_api_views_fulltext=renault

The 'RENAULT' lettering provides everything we need other than having to modify/build into a 'C' (probably using the 'E') and lightly modding the 'L' to 'I'.

We are doing great with the "I'll take one's" We are at 42 so far. There are always some stragglers who want one after they are all shipped, so I'll surely order a few extras.

Final pricing depends on the setup fees for silk screening, taxes, + shipping. Ultimately I'd like to have the caps made in yellow and white material so we don't have to silk-screen that much yellow onto a base white cap.

If we get to 50, then the base pricing drops by $1/cap. If we make it, then I am going to leave the pricing as is and donate $2/cap to the site instead of $1/cap.

Pricing should still be in the $21-23 range as best I can calculate.

I haven't heard from Keith…

Looks like a common font (a little too common, IMHO), so we would just need the name.

If it actually a created font then send it along…

No offense…but…I don't think we're dealing with brand recognition here…is there a deep need to use the same font??? This kinda kills the whole retro "renault" thing…no?

Please check your PMs

The whole idea when it was proposed to the mods was that it was exactly to include some form of brand recognition

Otherwise, what is the point of a Paceline hat?

And no, in my opinion, it doesn't kill the retro thing - that's projected by the design of the panels and stripes

We are perilously close to 50. Only one more! But we can still use more as a buffer to the few that will inevitably drop out for one reason or another.

Put me down for another... I'll wear one to work

Also - I also definitely like the Renault font, FWIW. But I'll buy either way. So long's there's a happy ass banana on 'em.

Great The B and lugger!

I will keep taking orders until the design is finalized and we have confirmation from Walz. But we are over 50 now so will have full flexibility with design and material.

So cotton it is. 3 panel. Well done everyone. Keep the orders coming

Dancing Banana would be a real throwback to the early Serotta days when the forum was a very minor sponsor of Sierra Nevada Cycling

(And when Dave T got DB decals made)

there are two sizes available.

small/medium will fit up to a 7 1/2 hat size. I wear a 59cm helmet and sm/med fits me fine

large/XL fits anything bigger than a 7 1/2 hat size. I've sold lots of caps to people with giant melons and never had a complaint about any of them being too tight. if you are right on the edge, then go with the l/xl

BBDave is on it with the OP.

There should be a design posted shortly that hopefully will satisfy everyone. Retro design, Paceline font and URL, and (hopefully) our own, beloved, banana guy.

BBDave is on it. He said that he would take a crack at it this weekend. So hopefully on Monday/Tuesday we will have something.

Specs:
custom 3 panel cotton cap from Walz
Silkscreened with their upgraded, soft feel ink
Paceline header copy and URL in Paceline font
approx 2cm tall banana center back
Paceline URL, possibly on the underside of the brim
retro Renault styling

Next steps:
1. Post final design
2. Verify final pricing
3. I will need the following information from everyone BEFORE THE CAPS ARE ORDERED.
Screen Name
Name
Mailing address, city, state, zip
email address
cap size
payment - I can take Paypal or you can mail me a check

OK men and women. The mods have spoken and here is the design we are going with. This is a mockup and there will be some minor mods to accommodate the Walz template but it will be essentially the same as this. We all need to be thankful to Nate (netdewt) for his work on this. It is no small task, I can assure you.

It has been pointed out that the URL needs to be corrected already. That will happen.

If you have more design suggestions, then feel free to keep them to yourself. Consider the design closed. Either you want it or you don't. Personally I love it and will be happy to wear it.

The final template has been sent to Walz for pricing. Once I have that, I will post it and get final counts and begin taking payments.

netdewt (Nate) did a huge amount of work on this cap. An assessment will be added to the price of each cap to be able to give him a free cap for his efforts. It is a small token of appreciation. Very small.

We have over 60 orders, which is excellent!
