View Full Version : Only ten miles per burrito?!

Was driving through Oakland today when I noticed these pro-cycling adverts posted around the bus stops. Nice to see the city encouraging cycling, but only ten miles per burrito? At that rate, I'd have to eat six burritos during a typical three hour ride. This RBC (rate of burrito consumption) clearly could have only been approved by a city council member who was in the pocket of the Taco Bell Corporation or some other equally nefarious burgeoning burrito business.

Not remotely close. Look at the Chipotle website, yikes!

My favorite burrito locally, in moderation.

Depends on the incline. Riding up a 10% grade might be 10 MPB*.

What I would give to have the Bay Area's choice of burrito joints. We got micro breweries opening up weekly and dispensaries...but the real-deal burrito is scarce in the Boulder Valley. :help:

and how much is a Burrito, $9? Is that commute considered cheap? doesn't sound encouraging.

If you go to Chipotle, you can request extra rice, extra beans, double wrap the burrito, get all the salsas, extra sour cream and cheese, all for free, and you might be able get double the MPB. ;)

Rice and tortilla alone are 500 calories.

I think the ad actually holds true, it's just phrased poorly. After eating a giant, authentic lard cooked meat burrito I usually ride straight home to take a nice" siesta" for an hour or so. That's usually 10 miles or less.

Does siesta = toilet time?
If I have a burrito, I'm on the crapper 30 in later so maybe 10 mpb is right for me?:eek:

Haha, you must be eating at the wrong spots, or maybe lactose intolerant ;)
I usually just go into a food coma after gorging myself and take a nice nap.

Well, running (at an easy pace) burns about 100 Calories per mile, and a Grande Burrito (with extra fillings) might come out to 1000 Calories, so 10 Miles/Burrito might not be far off for running.

The ad writer, likely a typical car driving American, probably doesn't know the energy expenditure difference between running and cycling (hey, a cyclist is just a pedestrian on wheels, right?), so they probably just looked at a chart for exercise Calories, and extrapolated that any exercise that carries one 10 miles must burn about 1000 Calories (= 1 burrito).
