Sure he wasn't JRA?

I bent my old Trek 400 HT back into place after a front-end encounter with the passenger door of a pick-up that pulled out in front of me. The paint crinkled and it eventually started to rust. Years later while out on a ride the DT cracked about 50% or the way around just below the DT shifter bosses. I rode home very carefully and by the time I got to my apartment I only had a sliver left holding the two parts of the DT together. (I had replaced the steel fork a while before that because the crinkled paint and rust at the crown was really getting scary.)

Ouch, cut the front of the bike off, top tube and down tube, keep seat tube and rear triangle, cutt off the der hanger, put in seat post and saddle=shop stool.

I broke a frame in Boulder, and someone in your shop made me a bottle opener out of the chain stay / RD hanger section. I still have it and it still works!
