So, I am watching Stage 1 of the 2014 TDF atm....

All riders do not have deep rims on their wheel sets.

I do not see any rims the same depth as my 6.7 Enve SES being used.

I know weight, inertia and stored energy is everything when riding.

What would be the rationale for the TDF riders not riding with deeper rims (like my 6.7 see rims) than what they are at moment?

Is actually a very, VERY tiny amount of energy, almost not measurable on a bicycle. Lost in noise. Weight, stiffness, reliability trump almost all else..and sponsorship $.

Is it windy today?

thanks OP.

Yes, i forgot to mention cross winds also play a part in selection of rim depth on the day...

They say there is a 10km/hr tail wind atm...

6.7 is a fairly deep rimset. On. Windy day like today I think most pros would prefer being on something under 60mm.

From this link below, what would be the closest wheel rim depth these riders are using today in TDF?

Windy and narrow roads maybe?

Putting aside rim shape, I'd guess most are on something around 45-55mm deep (similar to the 1.45 from Enve). Like a Zipp 404. That's pretty standard depth for these guys. I don't believe ENVE sponsors anyone so I doubt anyone is on their hoops today.

thanks guys.

how/why do narrow roads play a part in rim depth selection?

Lots of bikes on a narrow path. Little room for crosswind related error.
