Hi all,

Thinking about building up a fixie/single speed and had a question about rear wheel/hub spacing, etc...

The question is: Can any modern road bike be made into a single speed? I know the brakes, gearing etc, can be done...The question is: rear wheel hub spacing. Do they (whoever they are) make hubs for the spacing of modern road bikes? Or, does it take a special rear triangle spacing to work with single speed hubs?

Excuse my ignorance, but...Is a road bike a 130mm spacing and a fixed gear 120mm? Or, is there crossover and there are hubs that are single and 130mm spaced?

Hope this makes sense.

As always, thank you all in advance,

Steve

read these articles

short answer is yes there are 130mm fixed hubs

depending on your drop outs- a Phil Wood rear hub may be about your only option though

Traditiona road bikes are 130 and traditional track bikes are 120.

That said there are a few single/fixed hubs available in a 130 for road use.

we usually set up 130 bikes with a surly hub. The hub is actually spaced for 135 but you can just pop the end caps off and voila, it is a 130. They are cheap too, i think around $40 for a rear hub.

You can do the white industries ENO hub (which I have and love) that is available as a 130 and I think Paul Components makes a 130 hub, but they are expensive.

I third the ENO if you have vertical dropouts.

Is it at least in the good ol' US of A yet?

And no, the BLE will not be made into a single speed.

Just yesterday I put a 165mm axle and additional 10mm spacers in a record pista hub.

Took 5 min and works like a champ.
