I just switched from a (perfectly good) STI set up to Dia Compe levers and DT shifters. Anyway, the new levers seem to have a longer throw than the 5700 brifters, as I had to tighten up the straddle wire a bit. But now, I can't get the straddle wire off of the quick release to get the front wheel off. Is there some sort of trick to setting this up right? If I loosen the wire, braking suffers. Too tight, and I can't get the wheel off. Thanks for any input.

Can you use an adjustment barrel?

Tektro, TRP, or Campagnolo brake levers fix this issue. A barrel adjuster should work too, it just won't be a easy.

Trp also has a nice brake straddle cable that has built in barrel adjuster. Think it only works on their brakes tho

Sorry, guys, I'm a dolt. Barely discovered the quick release on the levers. Thank you to all that posted.

same thing happened to me. I just readjusted the initial tension on the brake cable.

edit: your solution works too! my levers didn't have a qr.

Yay! Can we have a pic? I'm always a fan of backdating sti. For me its campy ergo or shimano downtube.

Didn't see this guy until I noticed the inscribed "Release" right on there.
