I have 3 sets of PR 4 25mm clincher tires on 3 different wide rimmed wheels and man are they wide. What do they measure on normal 19mm wide rims?

The following was measured @85psi and the widest point listed, +/- 15psi had little affect on the measurements.

Hed C2 23mm rims: 27.5mm wide, 24.7mm tall

Taiwan mfg. carbon 25mm U shape rims : 27.8mm wide, 25.5mm tall

Reynolds Assault SLG 25mm rims: 26.5mm wide, 24.3mm tall

The height was measured from the top of rim to the top of tire.

As a point of reference I just spent a lot of money for a set of Compass 28mm Chinook Pass tires and they are barely larger than the 25mm PR 4's.

Hed C2 23mm rims: 27.8mm wide, 25.0mm tall

The extra width of the 25mm Michelins has always been a plus for me.

They measure 27.5mm on my Velocity A23 rims.

I have some 25 mm prorace 2's on hed 23c wheels. They also measure about 28 wide. I have 25 mm Continental gp4000s's on another Hed 23 wheelset, and they measure less width, closer to 27mm.

Hi Soky

To answer your original question: My 25 Michelin PR measure 26.5mm on DT 1.1 and on Mavic Open Pro rims.

Still plenty wide.

And thanks for posting the comparative measurements for the PRs and the 28 Compass tires. I was about to order some Compass thinking they would get me additional width but for that little I think I will pass.

You front fork vertical clearance with
F1 fork will definitely rub even with a mich 25. Personal experience and I just use a 23 there and a 25 in back, Never found a need for a 28 mm in my road bike over many years. A 25mm seems to work for all and most new carbon works with 25. In the last century a 21mm was the "hot" one and 23 the most common, Now 25 is hot with 28 mm gaining cycling want:fight:

Can't you just order the next larger size Compass tire?

The next bigger compass/Grand bois tire is the Cypress/Stampede. That is an honest 32mm. I have that on my cross bike for dirt road rides. Great tire but definitely won't fit into a Reynolds Ouzo fork (a true 28 or 29 is the max there).

does anyone know if an enve fork can fit a pro race 4?

Yes,

My issue is: Campy brakes are too tight a fit on the top. There is plenty of clearance on the fork.

Thanks, Jeff. And one more reason to run Shimano. ;):):)

...the external width of the rim you list has nothing to do with the effect on tire width...the internal bead hook-to-bead hook distance is what matters. Lou

I have 25c Michelin Pro 4s on a H Plus Son Archetype rim and they work fine with my Enve 2.0 Fork.

I am considering purchasing a pair of Stampedes for the same use. How durable have yours been?

I bought my Cypress tires slightly used and put on some 2000 odd miles of probably half pavement half dirt roads - including some dirt road races. The dirt roads around Wyoming range from occasionally nicely graded to ugly washboard to rough gravel.

After that use the front looks barely used and the rear is maybe half used (there is still some of the central groove/tread marks left).

So overall I would say that tread life is excellent. The sidewalls are on the thin side (part of what makes these tires ride so well!). After ploughing through sharp gravel at speed during a dirt road race I noticed some slight sidewall damage. But in regular riding when you can pick your own line through the nasty stuff I have never had any trouble with these tires.

As you can probably tell, I am a fan. I am 130 pounds and run them between 45 and 70 psi depending on riding surface. Mine are the regular sidewall types (not the extra legere).
