..........I always find out that something's broken. This time it's my rear wheel. Velocity A23 OC rim, the spokes appear to be pulling through the rim in four places. I don't think it'll polish out

Aren't you glad you found this while cleaning your bike instead of on a ride... 30 miles from home? This is a good example of why regular maintenance is so critical.

JB Weld will fix it, for sure. Maaaay lead to slight vibrations at speed, but way cheaper than a new wheel, right?

Unless this is sarcasm I can't capture, this is not a good idea.

That wouldn't have happened if you were riding 25s.

(For velotrack, that was sarcasm)

In all seriousness, agreed it was good you found it while it was sitting still.

Better to find it on the repair stand than have it fail 50 miles from home.

... or at 50mph on a descent

Wow, FOUR places???
Quality of the build or the rim itself?

Spoke tension way too high is my guess.

Obviously, he had already been riding with the wheel in this condition just fine. I don't mean to nitpick but a rim cracked at the nipples will usually not mean the end of the ride or a catastrophic failure while descending at 50mph like mentioned above.

Unless that's how it's discovered, was my point.

That's SOP for paired spoke bontragers. There are probably thousands of cracked ones still in service.*

*i don't condone this.

I had the same thing happen to my A23's. See what Velocity says.

Reminds me of the old Mavic heliums and open pro's. We used to ride them like that till we could no longer keep them true.
Shovel's right to much spoke tension.

Didn't Velocity move manufacturing from Asia to Florida relatively recently? Interesting that these types of issues persist.

Australia, not Asia.

How many holes in that rim, 24h?

Never had that failure to happen to me ever. Maybe bad luck. excessive tension together with bad luck?? Hope that is still under warranty.

Who built them? Drilling? Maybe talk to them or have them talk to Velocity..this is an unlikely occurance if the tension is proper..or unless the 'design' and build is not proper for the rider..

Its a 28 hole rim, laced 2x

I've emailed my wheel builder with the picture, I'll see what he says tomorrow.

I could be way off base, but I remember reading somewhere that this a bit of a problem with the OC rims.

I had one of the eyelets pull out of my couple month old dt swiss rr440 28h rim. Luckily I noticed it when putting the bike in the car, and not while riding.

The guy at the shop said he usually builds with lower than required tension.

fwiw dtswiss replaced the rim with a new one under warranty. Was kind of glad, the old one was a pain to get tires on and the new one is much better.

Proper tension is key, for both Velocity(no eyelet) and DT 440. Too high eyelet pull out, too low, wheel goes outta true. 100kgf, +/- about 5kgf.

I had the same problem and Velocity replaced my rim free of charge. It's really worth dropping them a nice email. Their customer service is excellent!

On campy hubs I build with 115kgf on rear ds. Less than that is too soft on the nds. Never had a problem with rims cracking.

Yes, sarcasm. I used multiple a's in may and ended with a dumb question to try to convey the sarcasm plainly, but must have not laid it on thick enough. I will on this in the future.

Spoke tension way too high is my guess.

I talked to a guy at velocity and HE said that it was probably a sign of too LOW tension, letti the nipple jackhammer up and down in the rim bed. Not sure I believe it.

I've since put a few hundred miles on the wheel with no adverse effects. Although it has slowly gone further and further out of true. Got some Archetypes on DT 350 hubs, thought I'd post a pic before the braking surface wears off. They look sick!

I'm afraid this story isn't going to have a happy ending...

I had to replace my Mavic Askium wheels for the same reason. I put a lot of miles on them so they did not owe me anything. Metal fatigue from my over blown proportions I guess.

Nice looking bike!
