A month back I rode the South Mountain TT. One of the nice things was that the promoters actively encouraged local photogs to shoot the race. It was nice to find this on Smugmug:

Where was this at?

The penultimate climb before the finish. My "cheering section" is shouting "12%...14%...15%". heh...like my legs didn't know it.

Yep. That's my "I'm about to show you what I had for breakfast" face.

That road is also very fun on the way down.

Great pic! I'd ask for the hi-res of that one and have it printed 8x10 and framed if that were me. At minimum, it needs to be your desktop

Convert the hi-res version to monochrome and hang it up!

This photograph has great composition and tells a great story for years to come!

I must get out more, the kid (Brandon )that set the record passed me last night on a local interval ride, he's fast.

Awesome image! Just remember, those photographers will only keep showing up if you buy their images. I aways go out of my way to support the photographers that show up for our races here in FL and I've bought images from the race photographers at the Austin Rattler who did a killer job.

It's a lot tougher to get people to buy than you would think. I've done my share of motorsport photography and it never seizes to amaze me how cheap some people are. Good camera equipment is expensive and it takes practice to get good. I couldn't even get people to make an offer on photos of them, and I don't think the photos sucked that bad.

A while back, I went and shot a motocross race for old time's sake. Do you guys know how bad dusty environments are for digital cameras? They were bad enough for film. A single piece of dust could scratch the whole roll of film.

The best offer I got was $2 for a full resolution image.

And yes, when I raced, I bought prints. I didn't ask for the negatives.

The only race photography I have is a palsy, too-distant, out-of-focus iphone video my mom took of me taking a turn in a cross race...

Ha, sweet skills!

I'll admit that I never buy the pictures. All of them I've seen have been too pricey for my tastes. But then again, they're not normally as good as this one either.

Mrs TR always buys a few every year (she's the artist). If we don't buy them the photogs will quit doing it.

As a photographer I'm always blown away at how cheap people can be. Granted, I don't do event photography but I constantly hear about the low balling that goes on. If someone shows up with pro gear they probably have upwards of $5k invested. They also have years of experience invested in being able to make an image as cool as the one posted. And yet half the schmucks I know will go to the photogs event site and swipe the low res image with the photographer's watermark and post it on Facebook. Most of the photographers I see at races are shooting for the fun of it but at some point they get the bright idea to try and make some cash off digital sales. I always tell them that if they get something good of me I'll buy it but I know I'll probably be the only one. What kills me is when your knees are full of arthritis and the only wheels you can get around on are attached to a wheel chair the only proof you'll have to show your buddies in the old folks home that you were a true lycra-wearing cycling fred is a photo like the one Lewis posted.

Also, for the record, I'm not directing my comments at Lewis. It's a great image and Lewis looks like he's having a terrible time in the best possible way in that photo.

BTW: Just wanted to let everyone know I bought three photos from the photog when they originally came out after the race. I also left him a nice note thanking him for the great "hero shot". If we don't reward artists for their work, art will go away.
