Can't get these working right:
Tiagra 3x9 brifters
Sugino xd300 crankset w/ 46-36-26 chain rings
XT FD

I have always had trouble getting FDs adjusted, so it could be me.
There are other parts in the garage so may need to swap something out.

Thanks for any help.

What length BB are you using and what type of bike?

I think others will chime in...and agree. The FDs all look the same but mt. FD have a different pull approach than the road ones.

You don't say what is not working. Rub could be the FD or BB length and / or both.

I will need to check BB length tomorrow.
I had this bike working with LX mountain bike shifters before, so if there is a compatibility issue - it is with a different pull from the shifter.
Frame is Salsa Las Cruces. I want drop bars...

It is not pulling derailleur far enough up to the big ring. It is not reaching the limit. I tried tightening the cable, but may need to do more.

Is the derailleur top or bottom pull?

You need a Shimano road triple FD.

Outside of Shimano 10 MTB (Dyna-Sys), isn't the cable pull different for Shimano road vs MTB front, but the same for rear?

I have XT RD's (9-speed or earlier) on a couple brifter setups and they work fine. Especially nice if you want a larger sprocket than most road RDs allow.

Awesome! I have one.

Yup, Shimano MTB front ders don't play well with Shimano road shifters. That's why it worked fine with your LX shifters but not the Tiagra.

While a Shimano road FD will work, I'd just pick up one of these guys:

This might not work as I didn't see anything about indexed shifting with Shimano road levers. I ran 46,48,and 52 rings with a Campy group with no problem because the front derailer is really friction rather than indexed like Shimano. I used a 48 tooth in a 9 spd. Dura Ace group and I had to use the half-click trim move going to the middle ring but it did work.

Thank you all for the help. This forum is remarkable.

Turns out I have a double FD in the bin. I will be heading to my LBS tonight for a triple.

Fder is not really compatible with those shifters..need a road triple frder like a 5703 or maybe 5603.

This.
I second this
Shimano 3x9 road STI won't pull an XT far enough to get it working as it should.

Fair point... so I ran off to search, the Harris Cyclery site says that they are.

As an aside, I use a 105 FD with Athena11 Ergos. I tend to think that most road-specific FD's are interchangeable with notable exceptions being the longer armed varieties (current Shimano Dura Ace and Ultegra, Campy Centaur and below "QS").

I've read in the past that Campy FD's pull closer to Shimano mtb FD's, which is on my list of things to try out of curiosity (for the touring rig). Hard to believe though, given that the 105 seems to work perfectly with my current setup (standard road triple) despite using the dumbed down power-shift levers.

Ultrashift? No surprise, although fewer clicks, still ratcheting friction shifter.

I've also used Campagnolo 10s front ders with shimano 9s STI with good results..

??2011/2012 Powershift is positional ala shimano.
