View Full Version : good performing, economical 10 spd chain recommendations w/ nickel finish

i've been running wippermann chains since making the jump to 10spd. they work well, but the nickel finish chains are getting too expensive for my taste. i do like having a tool-free masterlink.

wondering if others can recommend other chains that perform equally well on 10spd setups; still nickel finish and tool-free, but dont cost quite so much and still perform well.

KMC? Taya? no idea what the alternatives are these days!

I use the KMC X10SL pretty much exclusively. Can't fault it. Generally, I find it quieter than the Record chain.

Wally beat me to the punch!

+1 on the Wippermann Connex chains. In fact, I just built up a bike with a Chorus 11 build kit, so I cut the Chorus chain to length and used a Connex link to put it together. Works great!

Would be interested to hear any feedback on KMC.

i use KMC across the board. fixed gear, 9-sp, 10-sp and 11-sp. economical and trouble free as far as i'm concerned.

the KMC SL is like 50-70g lighter than the equiv wippermann...that's a lot of weight, like carrying a spare innertube for free!

I do believe the KMC link is a one time only operation though, correct?

Pretty sure they come with the "KMC missing link" which are reusable.

See here: Looks like their 11s links are not reusable, but their 10's are.

from the KMC website: "Always check Missing Link. Suggest to replace a new Missing Link when it is worn or after locking and unlocking 3 times."

i dont remove my chains alot anyways, but maybe just use the wippermann link instead.

Ok, this is what I had read on probikekit:

"the MissingLink from KMC allows you to fit and remove a chain with only an opening tool required. The non reusable speed chain has a pin length of 5.90mm and is designed for use with KMC and Campagnolo 10 speed chains"

For ten speed Shimano I use the KMC DX-10 OEM bulk chain from Ribble. About $18 and includes a Missing Link.

Ok, this is what I had read on probikekit...

i think that refers to the pins pressed-in by the factory, not the reusable link.

from the KMC owners-manual:

"Do not re-use chain pins after pin removal. Reconnect chain using a proper KMC connecting link."

Use KMC 10's chains with included master link. Keep in mind the master link that's sold separately is different for 10's Campagno chains than the one for 10's Shimano/Sram.

Timely thread. I was just thinking about this.

Going to give Kmc a shot.

I've had great results with KMC Missing Link 11s on my Record chain and although it says 'single use', I've reused each at least twice. I just carry a spare in my bag in case it fails.

I also use a KMC 10s for Mrs. Valley's bike. Shifts great.

Great products all around.

Nope, not single use.

Nope, not single use.

Definitely. They do get loose after a few cycles. Sometimes the chain has life left so I have a few spares to swap out.

Another vote for KMC. Never had a problem(30 + chains),and the prices are good.
